SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Point Park used timely power hitting and strong pitching down the stretch to earn a 6-4 non-conference victory over Slippery Rock on Tuesday evening.
The game opened as a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to break through in the first two and a half innings. Slippery Rock was the first to strike in the bottom of the third, using a string of extra-base hits to take control. Morgen Bilotte started the rally with a double to right center and came around to score on a Max Bernadowski double to left center. Stone Powell followed with another double, driving in Bernadowski to give The Rock a 2-0 lead.
Point Park responded emphatically in the fourth inning with a five-run outburst that flipped the momentum.
Luis Gonzalez sparked the rally with a one-out single, and Carlos de la Vega followed with a walk. After a flyout, Nicholas Briones delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a three-run home run to deep left—his first homer as a Pioneer—to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
The inning didn't stop there. Sebastian Hernandez worked a walk, Chris Williams singled, and Felix Rodriguez added an RBI single to extend the lead. Olindo Pezzone capped the inning with another RBI single up the middle, as Point Park sent eight batters to the plate and built a 5-2 advantage.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the fifth. Gonzalez reached again with a leadoff single and later scored on a Briones RBI groundout, giving Point Park a 6-2 cushion.
From there, the pitching staff held firm until the ninth. Slippery Rock made a late push as Treston Nemeth drew a leadoff walk and Brett Galcik followed with a single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Bilotte singled to bring in one run. A sacrifice fly from Bernadowski trimmed the deficit to 6-4 and put pressure on the Pioneers.
However, Joey Tedesco shut the door, retiring the final two batters to secure the win.
Logan Creamer earned his first victory of the season with a scoreless inning of relief, while Kyle Warnsman took the loss for Slippery Rock after allowing five runs over 3.2 innings.
