Ewing Homers Twice as Pioneers Sweep Doubleheader Vs Fairmont State

Pioneers take three of the four games in the season series

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Blake Ewing hit two home runs, including an extra-innings walkoff in game one, as Point Park baseball swept its doubleheader against Fairmont State on Monday at EQT Park.

Point Park (19-10, 11-5 MEC) won three of its four games over Fairmont State over the weekend. The Pioneers earned a 4-3 win over the Falcons in extra innings in game one, followed by a 7-6 victory in game two.

Game 1: 5-4 PPU, W: Tedesco (2-0), L: Gonzalez (1-1)

Point Park jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Chris Williams and Felix Rodriguez both walked, and Williams stole third as Rodriguez advanced to second on a wild pitch. Olindo Pezzone ripped a single to left to give the Pioneers two runs before they even recorded an out.

Fairmont State would go on to get a run back in the sixth inning before Reilly Bubb hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, giving the Falcons a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Trevor Jones reached on an error, and, after a sacrifice bunt by Sebastian Hernandez, moved to third due to defensive interference on the FSU shortstop. Felix Rodriguez hit a two-out single to left to force extra innings.

Ewing led off the bottom of the eighth for Point Park and hit the fourth pitch he saw out to center field for the walkoff blast - his 10th home run of the season. Ewing entered Monday second on the team in home runs.

Camden Dimidjian pitched 5.0 innings of one-run baseball for Point Park. Dimidjian struck out six batters while allowing two hits and four walks. Joey Tedesco pitched a scoreless top of the eighth for PPU, picking up the win.

Game 2: 7-6 PPU, W: Rodriguez (5-0), L: Dixon (0-2), S: Parker (6)

Point Park took a high-scoring game two, despite falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first. Fairmont State scored two of its runs in the opening frame off errors, but Blake Ewing launched a three-run home run to left in the inning's bottom half.

Chris Williams reached on a hit-by-pitch, and Olindo Pezzone hit an infield single to third base. Ewing's home run was his second in as many at bats, stretching over the doubleheader. Ewing tied Pezzone for the team-lead in homers with his swing, each boasting 11.

The Pioneers posted another three-run inning in the fourth, which began with walks from Trevor Jones and Felix Gonzalez. Jones and Gonzalez would go on to steal third and second respectively, with Jones stealing home for the team's fourth run of the game. Sebastian Hernandez walked and Chris Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Felix Rodriguez. Rodriguez tallied an RBI walk, and Olindo Pezzone hit a sacrifice fly to right field, giving PPU a 6-3 lead.

Fairmont State leveled the game with a three-run fifth inning, but Carlos de la Vega responded with a two-out solo shot to make it 7-6. de la Vega's blast was his first collegiate home run, and came at the end of his eight-pitch at bat.

Ethan Parker shut the door on the Falcons, posting 2.0 innings of work. Parker struck out two batters and only allowed one walk as he picked up his team-leading sixth save of the year.
