PITTSBURGH -- Trevor Jones tallied three RBIs as Point Park baseball beat California (PA) on Thursday 7-2 at PNC Park. The Pioneers' win marked career win number 700 for Head Coach Loren Torres.
Point Park (20-10) took the lead in the third inning and never looked back. Carlos de la Vega led off the inning with a walk and Chris Williams was hit by a pitch in the next at bat. A throwing error allowed de la Vega to advance to third, and he stole home as Felix Rodriguez walked. Blake Ewing then singled to right field, bringing Williams home.
Luis Gonzalez and Trevor Jones recorded back-to-back walks, with Jones' bringing Felix Rodriguez in to score. Josh Zambito then reached on an error, allowing Ewing to score. Felix Rodriguez grounded out to the pitcher, bringing Luis Gonzalez in to score for a five-run third inning for Point Park.
The Vulcans (17-12) responded with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning off the bat of Ikon Jones, bringing the score to 5-2 Point Park.
In the seventh inning, Luis Gonzalez hit a two-out single to center field, and Trevor Jones hit a home run down the left field line in the next at bat. Jones' home run was his fourth of the season, good for third best on the team.
Jones totaled three hits on Thursday, having hit a double to right center in the second and a single in the fifth. He led the game in hits and RBIs.
Point Park featured nine pitchers on Thursday, with Zane Griffaton picking up the win - his first of the season. Ramon Rodriguez recorded the most outs, garnering four. Rodriguez picked off Peyton Ford at first for the final out of the sixth inning.
Rodriguez was one of five Pioneer pitchers to tally a strikeout. Griffaton, Joey Tedesco, Manny Garcia, Harold Boyce and Camden Dimidjian all struck out a batter.
Loren Torres picked up his 700th career win on Thursday. Torres is in his 22nd year as a head coach, 17 of which have been with the Pioneers. His record as a head coach is now 700-358 (.662). Torres boasts 593 wins as the Pioneers' bench boss.
