NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – Point Park picked up a 9-5 win in game two on Friday to earn a doubleheader split at Salem. The doubleheader wrapped up Point Park's road slate this afternoon, with Salem taking the first game by a 6-5 final tally.
Game 2
In game two, Point Park used a three-run third inning and a five-run fourth inning to take control by a 9-3 margin.
After Wheeling scored a run in the bottom of the first, Point Park answered with a solo home run by
Luis Gonzalez to knot the game at 1-1. Max Atkinson hit an RBI double for Salem in the bottom of the second to put the Tigers back in front by a 3-1 margin.
In the top of the third with
Luis Gonzalez and
Trevor Jones on bae,
Carlos de la Vega hit an RBI double to tie the game for the second time.
Josh Zambito followed up the double with an RBI single to bring de la Vega around to score, making a 4-3 in favor of the Pioneers.
After Wheeling was held scoreless in the third, Point Park took control of the game with a two-run home run by
Felix Rodriguez and a three-run home run by
Trevor Jones in the top of the fourth.
With Point Park leading 9-3, Salem scored a single run in the fifth and seventh innings to make the final tally 9-5.
Harold Boyce improved to 8-3 on the season with the game two win. He allowed five runs on 11 hits while striking out three. Ethan Park earned the save, his eighth of the year.
Game 1
In game one, Point Park led 1-0 following an RBI single by
Blake Ewing in the top of the first.
Salem tied the game in the bottom of the first on a bulk.
After a scoreless second inning,
Chris Williams gave Point Park the lead again on a solo home run. Williams now has three home runs in his last four games.
However, Salem jumped ahead in the bottom of the third following an RBI single by Jimmy Laforce and a two-run home run by Tyson Shumaker – making it 4-2.
Point Park quickly tied the game in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Felix Rodriguez hit an RBI single that scored de la Vega from third and
Felix Gonzalez from second.
In the bottom of the fifth, Salem took the lead for good, in large part to a solo home run by Cody Thomas. LaForce added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 6-4.
Luis Gonzalez wrapped up the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Salem took the one-run win.
Ramon Rodriguez suffered the loss to move to 5-2 on the season. Rodriguez allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out two.
Point Park will wrap up the regular season on Sunday at Point Park Field in Greentree. The senior day doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Following Friday's MEC action, Point Park is now locked into the MEC Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the North. The Pioneers will open tournament play on Wednesday, May 6 (Time TBD).
