TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- Point Park University men's basketball was out-gunned by Washington Adventist University in its season opener Tuesday night, 112-89.
Point Park (0-1) made 14 3-pointers -- two more than WAU (2-0) -- and had four starters in double figures, but it could not overcome the 58-percent field goals and 60-percent 3-point shooting from the Shock.
Sa'iid Allen and Kenny Strong led Point Park with 17 points apiece. Allen, a three-year player for the Pioneers, made four 3-pointers. Strong, a newcomer, made 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.
Pioneers point guard Gavin Rajahpillay added 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds and also made three treys. Fellow newcomer T.J. Bates scored 10 points to notch four starters in double digits.
Point Park shot 40 percent from the field, but that could not keep pace with WAU, which made 40 of 69 field goals for 58 percent. Elliott Meredith led five Shock players in double digits with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyrus Fleetwod added 18 points on 3 for 3 from long range. Charles Vines added 14 points and three treys, and Calvin Lovitt had 15 points and made a couple of 3-pointers. Brian Bridgeforth, a 6-10 center, added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
WAU made 12 of 20 from long range for 60 percent. That made up for its 19 turnovers, which were two more than Point Park.
The Pioneers will next be in action Nov. 11-12 at the Pikeville (Ky.) Classic. Point Park opens the tournament versus NAIA Division II No. 1-ranked St. Francis (Ind.) and then plays NAIA Division I No. 19 Pikeville (Ky.) the next day.
