Point Park edges Wilberforce on King's and-1 with 0.8 seconds left

PITTSBURGH -- Daniel King scored on a drive to tie the game with 0.8 seconds left, and after being fouled on the play, he made the ensuing bonus free throw to give Point Park University a 73-72 win over Wilberforce on Thursday night at CCAC-Allegheny.

King, a sophomore from Detroit, Mich., led all scorers with 26 points. Point Park (4-7, 1-2 RSC) got a steal by Fousseini Konate on the game's final possession to seal the win over the Bulldogs (2-12, 0-1 AII).

Point Park trailed just about the whole game -- the Pioneers didn't take their first lead until Konate's putback gave the Pioneers a 67-66 lead with 4:46 left.

The Pioneers trailed 10-0 the first four minutes, and they were still down, 40-34, at the half. The Pioneers kept it within two possessions for a lot of the first half, but 15 first-half turnovers prevented Point Park from making too big of a move on the scoreboard.

Point Park finished with 24 turnovers, and Wilberforce had 20 of its own. There were also many fouls in addition to the numerous turnovers, and scoring with contact was a key part of the outcome. Wilberforce's Lajuane Marshall, who led the Bulldogs with 21 points, scored as he was fouled for an old-fashioned 3-point play and a 72-70 lead with 17 seconds left.

Point Park called timeout, and after running the clock down to the final seconds, King drove down the right side for the win. Wilberforce called timeout, and King made the free throw on the other side of it. King made 9 of 17 from the floor and a couple of treys.

Asim Pleas scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Pioneers. He had 14 by halftime to keep Point Park within a couple of possessions at the break.

Point Park's Rushan Roberts scored 10 points off the bench for the second game in a row. He made a couple of big plays down the stretch, including an and-1 and a 3-pointer from beyond the arc to pull the Pioneers within 66-65 late.

Konate tallied nine points, nine rebounds and his final steal for the Pioneers. Aaron Barlow added seven points, nine rebounds and a couple of steals.

Point Park shot 50 percent for the game, which included 56 percent (15 for 27) the second half. Wilberforce shot 46 percent overall and 40 percent (8 for 20) from long range. Tony Collins made 4 of 6 from beyond the arc on his way to 16 points.
