Point Park splits doubleheader slugfest with NCAA Division II UVA-Wise

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Point Park University baseball put up 27 runs and 36 hits in doubleheader Monday versus NCAA Division II UVA-Wise. The teams split a pair of slugfests with Point Park taking the opener, 18-3, and the losing the nigthcap, 13-9.

Point Park (3-3) banged out 23 hits in the first game of the day. The Pioneers got out to a wide margin early with eight runs on eight hits in the second inning.

Richard Perez led the hitting for Point Park going 4 for 6 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs. Stefan Mrkonja was 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Andres Herrera was 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs.

Nicholas Beardsley (1-0) was sharp on the mound for the Pioneers as the sophomore righty earned the win in six shutout innings. Beardsley allowed just four hits, did not walk a batter and collected six strikeouts.

Mrkonja's two-run homer in the fifth pushed Point Park's lead to 14-0. The Pioneers were up, 18-0, after Perez's solo shot in the top of the seventh.

In the second game, Point Park was up, 4-0, early on, but a big inning by UVA Wise (5-8) swung the tide in favor of the Cavs. UVA-Wise put up eight runs in the top of the fifth. That turned a 6-5 deficit into a 13-6 lead. The big hit was a grand slam by Nate Thompson that made the score 9-6 with the Cavs on top.

Down to its final three at bats, Point Park was able to put up three runs but got no closer than the final score of 13-9. Logan Linder and Cole Johnson were both 3 for 4 to lead the 13-hit attack for the Pioneers. Linder's RBI single and Johnson's two-run double built the 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Other offensive leaders for the Pioneers were Daniel Sanchez going 2 for 4 with an RBI double and Erik Montero going 1 for 1 with three walks and three runs scored. Edberg Dominguez drove in two runs.

Point Park used three pitchers in game two with Felix Castillo getting the start. He pitched into the fifth, and that's when he got into trouble with UVA-Wise's big inning. Daryl Pino came on to pitch 0.1 innings, and Linder was next to keep the Cavs at 13 runs the final 2.2 innings and give Point Park a chance.

Point Park concludes its stay in Florida with two games Tuesday versus (RV) Judson (10 a.m.) and Mt. Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) (12:30 p.m.).
