WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Point Park University baseball finished up its Florida trip on Tuesday with a 6-5 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) and a 19-10 victory over (RV) Judson (Ill.).
The Pioneers (5-3) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Mt. Vernon Nazarene (5-4). Point Park trailed 5-2 in the sixth and then 5-3 entering its final at-bat in the seventh.
Daniel Sanchez came through with the game-winning hit, a walk-off single for the 6-5 win. Earlier in the inning, Erik Montero ripped an RBI single, and Logan Linder stroked an RBI double to tie things up at 5-5.
Point Park's eight hits came from eight different players, and it got the offense to come around at the right time. The Pioneers had an earlier lead of 2-1 after Emmanuel Lopez's two-run homer in the second inning.
Roberto Rodriguez started for Point Park and pitched into the sixth inning. He gave up six hits, although two of them were home runs. Keenan Smith pitched the final 1.2 innings of relief and got the victory. He did not give up a hit or a run.
Point Park's 19-10 win over Judson made sure the Eagles didn't come back late to win, something that Judson did to Point Park two days prior on Sunday. With the game tied at 10-10 through five innings, Point Park scored five in the sixth and four more in the seventh to win going away.
It was a consistent offensive attack for Point Park, which scored in six of the seven innings and totaled 23 hits. Seven different players had a mult-hit game.
The biggest game at the plate belonged to Stefan Mrkonja, who was 5 for 6 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. He produced a three-run double in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh to stretch things out.
Richard Perez piled up four hits in five at bats and collected four RBIs. Andres Herrera also had four hits in five trips to go along with three runs and two RBIs.
Coming up with two hits each were Lopez, Logan Linder, Sanchez. Cole Johnson scored three times and walked twice.
The Pioneers used three pitchers of which Cole Horew got the start, the eighth different starting pitcher for the Pioneers the first eight games of the season (since Saturday).
Point Park opens up River States Conference play with its next games, which are scheduled for this coming week at Rio Grande (Ohio).
