BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Point Park University men's basketball started its two-day road trip to Buffalo, N.Y., on Monday night with a 71-56 loss to Bryant & Stratton College (N.Y.). The host Bobcats (4-1) pulled away the final 10 minutes as the Pioneers (2-3) experienced cold shooting down the stretch.
Point Park held a 36-35 lead at halftime, and it was a 51-49 game in favor of Bryant & Stratton with 10:18 remaining. But then the Pioneers went cold scoring just seven more points the rest of the way and a total of 20 points the second half.
Senior guard Asim Pleas put up 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to pace Point Park. Daniel King added 12 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Justice Cuthbertson contributed 10 points and five rebounds to make it three Pioneers in double digits. Kyle Carrington chipped in eight points and five boards.
Both teams had their shooting struggles in the first half with both the Pioneers and Bobcats shooting 33 percent the first 20 minutes. Point Park had success from long range making 5 for 13 the first half, and it also got a boost by making 13 of 18 free throws before the break.
The second half was a different story with Point Park making only 7 for 33 from the floor and 4 for 19 from the outside, both for 21 percent. The Pioneers were 2 for 8 from the foul line down the stretch. Bryant & Stratton shot 52 percent (13 for 25) the second half and made 8 of 10 free throws to pull away.
Bryant & Stratton, which is coached by former NBA player and Syracuse product Damone Brown, had Nicc Johnson lead the way with 24 points, nine rebounds and 4 for 6 from long range. Guard Tyrell Mitchell added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Point Park remains in Buffalo to play at Villa Maria (N.Y.) (5-0) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
