UNION, Ky. -- Point Park University women's golf is among the nine teams battling the elements and the golf course at the 2018 River States Conference Women's Golf Tournament, which started Monday at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Ky.
The Pioneers carded a team score of 442 and are in sixth place of nine teams after the first round on Monday. Bruttally tough playing conditions greeted the tournament, which included snow, sleet, rain and 20-25 mile per hour winds at various points. Snow delayed the start of the tournament to 1 p.m. ET and stuck around when play began.
The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes, but the snow delay shortened it to 36 holes, the minimum needed to conduct the championship. The final 18 holes are Tuesday with a 10 a.m. start time planned.
Lindsey Swanson led the Pioneers in the first round with a score of 99. The first nine holes were the toughest for the Pioneers as a team, but their scores improved as the day went on. Swanson carded a 44 on the front nine, which were her final nine holes of the day. Alyssa Demangone shot 108, Carly Henry shot 116, and Sydney Schaffer shot 119 for the Pioneers.
Midway (Ky.) University leads the tournament by 23 shots over IU East and IU Kokomo, which are tied for second. Midway had four players shoot in the 80s for a team score of 344. IU East and IU Kokomo each shot 367.
The individual leaderboard has three players tied at the top for first place with an 85. That includes Midway's Kathryn Lawler and Rylee Beard and IU East's Breanna Nowak. There were a total of eight players who broke 90 on the day with four of them shooting 87.
