Rd 1 Update: Point Park Golf teams at CMU Fall Shootout

APOLLO, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's and women's golf teams began play at the Carnegie Mellon University Fall Shootout on Saturday, and after 18 holes, the Pioneers' women's team is in fifth place of 10 teams, and the men's team is 11th of 14. The tournament is being held at The Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Pa. The final round is Sunday.

Joey Walz is tied for first place after 18 holes of the women's tournament. The Point Park junior fired a 3-over 77 to tie with Carnegie Mellon's Yedin Lui and York College's Anna Moore. That led the Pioneers to a team score of 360 in the first round, three shots ahead of Washington & Jefferson and also ahead of Clarion, Westminster, St. Vincent and Carlow.

Lindsey Swanson shot 89 for Point Park and is in a tie for 25th place. Olivia Stawovy is three shots back with a 92 and 31st place. Other scores were Sydney Schaffer (102) and Megan Locke (106).

The Point Park men's team shot 307 in the first round and stands in 11th place of 14 teams after 18 holes. There were nine teams that shot under 300 led by Allegheny with a 276 and Thomas More with 278.

Justin Guzik shot a 2-over 72 to lead Point Park and sits in eighth place individually. There were seven players who were under par with two of those by Allegheny and three by Thomas More. Allegheny's Patrick Del Rosso shot a 4-under 66 for the first-round lead.

Point Park had four players who shot in the 70s on Saturday, including individual competitor Gino DiPardo with a 75. Registering for the team scoring were Gage Basiletti with a 76, Rafeal Perez with a 78, Matt D'Amico at 81 and Alex Smith at 83.
