Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- No. 16-ranked Point Park University and (RV) Judson (Ill.) University split two NAIA baseball games Sunday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Both games included big rallies by the winning teams and a big swing of the bat to provide the difference.
In the first game, Jake Forgrave's three-run homer in the bottom of ths sixth pushed Point Park to a 9-6 win. Point Park came back from a 5-0 deficit early on. In the nigthtcap, Josh Krueger's grand slam in the last of the sixth made the score 8-4 and capped a six-run inning for the Eagles. Judson went on to win by that same final score.
The Pioneers and Eagles will meet again on Monday at 10:15 a.m. for the rubber match of the three-game series. The game will take place at Warner (Fla.) University in Lake Wales, Fla. The second game of Point Park's split doubleheader will be versus Warner at 1 p.m.
POINT PARK 9, JUDSON 6
Jake Forgrave was 3 for 4 with six RBIs and his three-run homer to power the Pioneers' comeback. Judson took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but Point Park drew even with four runs in the third inning. Forgrave's two-run double was one of five hits in the inning. Tyler Dobie followed with an RBI double of his own to tie things up. Earlier, Luis Mujica knocked in a run with a base hit.
Erik Montero, who as 3 for 3 with a walk in the game, ripped an RBI double in the fourth to give the Pioneers the lead for good, 5-4. Dobie ended up 2 for 3 with two doubles, and Mujica was 2 for 4.
Point Park starting pitcher Felix Castillo shook off the early deficit to get the win. After Judson's big first inning Castillo settled in and did not give up another run until the seventh inning. He struck out nine, walked one and worked around 11 hits. Ruben Ramirez retired the last batter of the game to earn the save.
JUDSON 8, POINT PARK 4
The nightcap was Judson's turn to rally with the Eagles scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The big blow was Josh Krueger's grand slam with one out, which made the score 8-4. Krueger was 4 for 4 with six RBIs.
The game was scoreless until Point Park scored three times in the top of the fifth. Cole Horew, the Pioneers' starting pitcher, helped himself with a lead-off triple. Antonio Carrillo followed with one of his two doubles to produce a run. Erik Montero then blasted an RBI double for one of his two hits. Tyler Dobie finished off the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Although Judson plated two runs in the bottom half, Horew retired the final two batters of the inning to strand two and keep the Pioneers in front. Horew got an insurance run when freshman Carlos Burroughs led off the sixth with a home run for a 4-2 lead.
Still batting in the sixth, the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs. But eventual winning pitcher Chris Cuppini got out of the jam, and Judson rode the momentum into its big inning.
Horew finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in 5.2 innings of work. Ruben Ramirez pitched the final 0.2 innings giving up two hits, including the grand slam.
