AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Point Park University baseball beat Judson (Ill.) University, 4-2, on Monday from the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational to win the rubber match in the three-game series versus the Eagles. The Pioneers (3-3) concluded their day with a 14-2 loss at Warner (Fla.) University.
The Pioneers had to settle for another split, and they will play their final games in Florida versus Mt. Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Ryan Huber powered the Pioneers to the victory over Judson. The junior right-hander from Edmond, Okla., started and pitched 6.1 innings to get the victory. He piled up nine strikeouts, walked none and allowed just one earned run.
Huber held Judson off the scoreboard the first six innings. An error, a double and a sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the Point Park lead to 4-2. But Ruben Ramirez came in to get the final two outs -- both via strikeout -- to finish off the 4-2 win and earn his second save.
The Pioneers got three runs in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Three straight walks preceded Erik Montero's sacrifice fly. Then two hit by pitches in a row made it 3-0. In the seventh, Tyler Dobie picked up his second RBI of the game with a base hit and a 4-0 lead.
In the Pioneers' second game of the day, Warner (12-4) was waiting for its first action. It was the middle game of three games on the day with Warner playing Judson directly after.
The Royals were up 3-0 when they broke the game open on Rafael Astacio's three-run homer in the third and Alex Vazquez's two-run homer in the fourth. The latter made the score 8-0.
Point Park had three of its five hits in the fourth inning and was attempting a rally. The Pioneers did cut the score to 8-2, but the Royals got out of the jam with a double play to end the inning and kill the momentum.
