Point Park earns RSC No. 2 seed with win over Asbury (Ky.)

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Point Park University baseball got an important win to end the regular season on Tuesday, an 8-0 victory over Asbury (Ky.) University in a makeup game. The Pioneers traveled to the Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy to meet the Eagles halfway and make up the third game of the River States Conference series that was rained out April 19 in Wilmore, Ky.

Point Park (31-15, 19-8 RSC) had Christian Negron toss a three-hit shutout and got home runs from Antonio Carrillo and Alejandro Pelaez to win the key matchup with Asbury (24-20, 15-12 RSC). With the victory, the Pioneers moved up one spot to the No. 2 seed for the RSC Baseball Championship, which begins Thursday, May 2

Point Park and Asbury will now head to Chillcothe, Ohio, for the conference tournament, where they will meet again for the first playoff matchup. The Pioneers and the No. 5-seeded Eagles will square off Thursday at 3 p.m., the middle game of three on the day. The tournament will be played at VA Memorial Stadium.

Negron improved to 5-0 by blanking Asbury. He cruised through multiple 1-2-3 innings and settled into a groove in the middle part of the game. Asbury had just three singles, which were scattered across his outing.

Carrillo went 3 for 5, and his three-run homer off of Alec Lush in the third inning made the score 3-0. Pelaez went 4 for 4 with a homer and a double, and his solo shot to lead off the fifth bumped the score to 4-0.

The Pioneers strung together some hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to score three runs in the top of the seventh and pad the lead to 7-0. Cole Horew was 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs, including a run-scoring single in the seventh.
