FLORENCE, Ind. -- Senior Joey Walz shot 78 on Monday to lead Point Park University women's golf in the first round of the River States Conference Women's Golf Fall Preview. Walz, from Pittsburgh, Pa., is five shots off the lead entering the final round on Tuesday.
Walz's 6-over effort made her one of just four players in the field to shoot under 80 on the day. She was also one of just five players to card multiple birdies over the first 18 holes with Walz sinking two on the day.
Point Park shot a team score of 378 for eighth place after round one. There are eight teams competing this week at the preview to the RSC Women's Golf Championship at the same course in the spring.
The Pioneers trail University of Rio Grande (Ohio), which is in seventh place at 371. The Pioneers are 14 shots back of Oakland City (Ind.), which stands in sixth place at 364.
Point Park had Olivia Stawovy shoot 97 and Megan Locke come in at 98. Carly Henry went out in 48 but ended up with a 105 to round out the team score. Darien Lees shot 114 as the Pioneers' fifth player.
Asbury (Ky.) University took the first-round lead with an opening 326, which is two shots ahead of Midway (Ky.) University in second place at 328. Indiana University East sits in third place and 10 shots off the lead after a 336.
Asbury's Faith Wiley grabbed the individual lead after 18 holes thanks to a 1-over par showing of 73. She played her last nine holes -- the front 9 -- in 1-under par to enjoy a 1-shot lead over Midway's Emilie Hill, who posted a tourney-high three birdies and shot 2-over 74. Hannah McCrabb of Asbury is in third place with a 5-over 77.
