YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Point Park University men's basketball has picked up another NCAA Division I matchup. The Pioneers will take on Youngstown State University on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio.
For Point Park (0-3), it will be the third NCAA Division I game in a span of eight days. The NAIA Pioneers visited Kent State on Dec. 2 and Robert Morris on Dec. 5. Head coach Joe Lewandowski and the Pioneers look forward to another challenge playing up in the ranks during the pause in River States Conference action.
For Youngstown State, it will be the season opener. The Penguins had an opening in their schedule when their planned opener versus Bluefield (Va.) College was postponed for the same night they added Point Park.
Youngstown State welcomes back four starters from a team that went 18-15 overall and 10-8 in the Horizon League last year. The Penguins were handed high expectations this year as they were picked second in the Horizon League preseason poll.
Point Park has all five starters returning this year. It's an experienced team with 13 of the 18 roster players as juniors or seniors. The Pioneers have been missing two to three starters the last couple of games after Thanksgiving break and not having the full team make it back in time to enter the COVID-19 protocols.
Through three games, Kameron Shockley is averaging a team-high 10.3 points per game. Newcomer Tony James totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener but has not played the last two games. The Pioneers have five players averaging between 6.0 and 8.5 points per game while taking on the NCAA DI schools in two of their three games so far.
