PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's basketball used a big second half to defeat Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo, 81-64, on Saturday at the Student Center in Downtown Pittsburgh.
The Pioneers (3-6) improved to 3-2 versus non-NCAA Division I competition by outscoring the Bobcats (5-3) by a score of 51-34 in the second half.
The teams were deadlocked at 30-30 after a back-and-forth first half. But Point Park started the second half on a 15-1 run to take control. The Pioneers did not allow the Bobcats to make a field goal the first 5:38 of the second stanza. By then, Point Park was up 45-31.
Jesse Calloway scored a game-high 18 points for Point Park. He made five 3-pointers, one of which finished off the 15-1 run to start the second half.
Four of Point Park's five starters scored in the double figures. The only one who didn't, 7-footer Jagshaanbir Singh Jhawar, got the start and controlled the inside with nine points, 15 rebounds and two blocks.
Garret McHenry piled up 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four made 3-pointers. Sherron Schifino added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals while Tony James put up a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Point Park dominated another opponent on the boards with a 55-31 advantage. The Pioneers had 19 assists on 30 field goals. Those stats helped to make up for 20 turnovers.
Point Park shot 45 percent overall and made 11 3-pointers. Bryant & Stratton shot 32 percent from the floor.
Point Park had a slow start as it needed an 8-0 run to take its first lead of 20-19. Bryant & Stratton answered right back with a 9-2 run for a 28-22 edge before the Pioneers closed the half on an 8-2 run to knot things up.
Point Park's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Carlow with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Oakland Catholic High School.
