Pioneers open up with split on Saturday

MARION, N.C. -- Point Park University baseball opened its season on Friday by splitting two games at The Battle at Big League Camp in Marion, N.C. The Pioneers (1-1) started out with a 2-1 win over Cumberland (Tennn.) in extra innings. They closed out the day by absorbing an 11-5 loss to Cumberlands (Ky.).

Ed Pfluger was the hero in the first game as he hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to give Point Park a 2-1 lead. Ruben Ramirez then closed out his relief out by getting a strikeout and a double play in the bottom half to end the game.

Marco Quintanar got the start versus Cumberland (6-4), and he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit in his outing, which included seven strikeouts and two walks. Ramirez got the win in 3.0 innings giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the sixth to break up the scoreless tie. Pfluger, who was 3 for 4, led off with a single. He later moved to third on an error by the pitcher, and he scored on Ty Andrews' sacrifice fly.

Cumberland strung together three hits, including a triple, to tie it up versus Ramirez in the bottom half of the sixth.

In the second game of the day versus Cumberlands (Ky.), the Patriots scored three runs in the second and eight in the third to break the game open. That made the score 11-1. Although the Pioneers scored three runs in the fifth off Carlos Sanchez' RBI single and a two-run single by Luis Hernandez, they got no closer than six runs.

Point Park had seven hits with Danilo Leon leading the way at 3 for 3 with a walk and Hernadez going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. The Pioneers drew 10 walks as a team.

Point Park finishes up the weekend on Sunday versus Northwestern Ohio at 12 p.m. and another matchup with Cumberland (Tenn.) at 3 p.m.
