Point Park sweeps Friday DH on Day 1 in Florida

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. -- Point Park University baseball had its bats come alive late in the first game of the day, a 6-2 comeback over Spring Arbor (Mich.), and the offense continued right on through in a 20-5 win over Trinity Baptist (Fla.) on Friday. The split doubleheader opened up the five-game weekend for the Pioneers (5-1) down in Florida.

Point Park will see Trinity Baptist (Fla.) twice more with a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. before finishing up the trip at NAIA No. 1-ranked Southeastern (Fla.) on Sunday for a single game at 1 p.m.

POINT PARK 6, SPRING ARBOR 2
Nicholas Beardsley gave up just one earned run in his complete game of 7.0 innings, and that gave the Pioneers time for their comeback victory. Spring Arbor took a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Beardsley put up zeroes the rest of the way.

Point Park's offense came through with four runs in the fifth off the bat of first baseman Ty Andrews' grand slam. The Pioneers scored twice more in the sixth to pad the lead before Beardsley finished it off in the seventh.

Point Park had eight hits with Jouseph Renovales, Ed Pfluger and Danilo Leon getting two apiece. Emille Morillo was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk.

The insurance runs in the sixth came about with a walk to Luis Mujica, Leon's base hit and stolen base, a sacrifice fly from Luis Hernandez and then two straight singles from Renovales and Pfluger.

Beardsley's day included six hits across his 7.0 innings. He struck out six and walked two. An error and a couple of hits in the second led to a pair of runs for Spring Arbor.

POINT PARK 20, TRINITY BAPTIST 5
The Pioneers bashed out 20 hits up and down the starting lineup and bench to batter Trinity Baptist in the second game of the day. The Pioneers were up 11-3 when many of the bench players got their chance. They added nine more runs to the scoreboard.

Ty Andrews smashed his second grand slam of the day, which highlighted a seven-run second inning. That was Point Park's second home run of the inning as Carlos Sanchez started things with a two-run bomb.

Point Park added four in the third with Antonio Carrillo and Danilo Leon each stroking RBI doubles. Four more runs came in the fourth thanks to five hits and a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez was 2 for 4 with his home, Leon went 2 for 3 with two doubles and Carrillo was 3 for 4 with a double. Jouseph Renovales went 2 for 4 as well. The bench kept the hits coming with Edwin De La Rosa going 2 for 3 with a double, Dylan Winseck 2 for 4 and Roberto Mejia, Jr. 1 for 2 with a double.

Cole Horew (1-0) got the start and earned the victory in 5.0 innings pitched. He gave up five hits and one walk. All three of his strikeouts came in the fifth, his final inning of work. Tyler Pullin threw the final two innings to close it out.
