Point Park opens series with 12-2 win at WVU Tech

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Point Park University baseball opened its River States Conference series at WVU Tech with Saturday's 12-2 victory in seven innings. The game was scheduled for nine, but it ended on the 10-run rule, which comes into effect after seven.

Point Park (11-7, 4-3 RSC) rapped out 14 hits and did all of its scoring in two innings with four in the third and eight in the fourth. That was plenty of run support in back of winning pitcher Nicholas Beardsley, who gave up just the two early runs in his complete game of 7.0 innings.

WVU Tech scored twice in the first inning. But that's all the Golden Bears got off of the senior righty from Torrance, Calif. Beardsley gave up six hits on the day, but only three in the final six innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Point Park took the lead for good on Antonio Carrillo's three-run homer with two outs in the third. That made the score 4-2. The inning started with Dylan Winseck doubling for one of his four hits, and Emille Morillo following with a double of his own to get the Pioneers on the board. After Ed Pfluger's base hit, Carrillo went deep two batters later.

Winseck was 4 for 4 with three RBIs. He was 2 for 2 with three RBIs in the fourth inning alone when the Pioneers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight times. Winseck singled for an early RBI in the outburst. He later finished it off with a two-run single with two outs. That made the score 12-2 and put the mercy rule in play.

Another big hit in the fourth was Morillo's two-RBI base hit. He was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Pfluger finished 3 for 3 while Carrillo was 1 for 3 with four RBIs and scored two runs.

By the time the Pioneers had the lead, Beardsley was well into cruise mode. He retired 13 batters in a row, a stretch that took him all the way from the end of the second to the start of the seventh. A lead-off single in the seventh was the only thing to break that up. But Beardsley got the next batter swinging and got a double play right after to end it.

Point Park and WVU Tech will complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Bowen Field in Bluefield, Va. Live stats will be provided with links to coverage at PointParkSports.com/Live.
