FLORENCE, Ind. -- Point Park University is in ninth place of 12 teams after Day 1 of the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship played Monday at Belterra Golf Club in Florence, Ind. The Pioneers shot team scores of 336 and 328 and have 18 holes left in the final round starting Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. ET.
Matt D'Amico shot a 76 in the first round for the Pioneers. That was tied for seventh place after 18 holes. D'Amico shot 84 in the second 18 of the day and sits in a tie for 23rd place at 160 after two rounds. D'Amico's opening round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 eighth and also one birdie on his scorecard.
Alex Smith is Point Park's highest-ranked player after Day 1 and is a tie for 21st place of 61 players in the field. Smith opened up with an 81 and then shot 78 in round two. He is among the tournament leaders shooting 2-under on the Par 5s, and he ranks ninth in the field with pars on 21 of the 36 holes played so far. Smith posted 12 pars and a birdie to highlight his second round.
Greg Fedor knocked a lot of strokes off his scorecard shooting an 80 in the afternoon round. He started out with a 91. Anthony Savarino shot rounds of 88 and 86 and tied Smith for the team lead with three birdies on the day, all of which came in the second 18 for Savarino. Anthony Santilli shot 91-86 to round out the team scoring. Tyler Hillard shot 93-39 playing as an individual.
Midway (Ky.) University shot rounds of 303 and 297 and has an 18-shot lead over the 11 other teams after Day 1. The top six teams in the standings are with 29 shots of the lead.
Brescia (Ky.) University (324-313) in seventh place and Oakland City (Ind.) (320-319) in eighth place are the two teams in front of Point Park in the standings. Point Park is paired with those two teams for the final round Tuesday. The teams will go off in threesomes beginning at hole No. 1 at 8:00 a.m.
