LSU-S forces winner-take-all game versus Point Park

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- LSU-Shreveport forced a second championship game at the Williamsburg, Ky., bracket of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round with an 8-1 victory over Point Park University on Wednesday from Doyle Buhl Stadium.

Both teams are 3-1 and the only teams left in the five-team bracket. Point Park (40-15) and LSU-Shreveport (42-14) will play for the third time this week on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. ET with the winner moving on the NAIA World Series next week.

The Pilots had Alex Bookman throw into the eighth inning while holding the Pioneers to one run. His longest outing of the year started off with a solo homer by Ed Pfluger, the second batter he faced. But Bookman, who came into the game with 30 innings pitched in his previous 15 outings, went 7.0 innings, scattered six hits, struck out three and walked none.

Pfluger and Dylan Winseck had two hits apiece for the Pioneers. LSU-Shreveport had nine hits with four of them being big ones.

Nicholas Beardsley got the start for Point Park on one day's rest. He began the fourth inning with the score 1-1. Austin McNicholas led off with a solo homer. After two walks, Taylor Fajardo delivered the biggest blow of the game, a three-run homer that made the score 5-1.

Payton Robertson (2 for 4) and McNicholas (3 for 3) led the offense as the No. 1 and 2 batters in the order. They stroked consecutive singles to start the fifth. That was the first full inning for Point Park's Ryan Huber. That set the table for Carlos Pinyero's two-run double and Ryne Ray's sacrifice fly, and it was 8-1.

Beardsley pitched 3.1 innings and gave up three hits, unfortunately with each of them being homers. Huber tossed 2.0 innings allowing four hits but like Beardsley ran into a tough stretch of batters.

The Pilots scored in only three innings, but it was enough with Bookman keeping the Pioneers off the board. Josh Fortenberry pitched the final 2.0 innings to finish off the win.

Jonathan Pacheco threw 2.2 scoreless innings for Point Park to keep the score at 8-1. He struck out four and allowed just two hits. But the offense did not come around.
