PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University finished off the regular season with a sweep of Oakland City (Ind.) University over the weekend. The Pioneers (34-12, 20-7 RSC) celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a wins of 10-1 and 4-3 in a doubleheader. Point Park completed the series on Sunday with an 11-1 victory in eight innings.
With the final sweep, Point Park secured third place in RSC standings, and the Pioneers will be the No. 3 seed out of six teams at the RSC Baseball Championship May 6-9 in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Pioneers were the only RSC team beat No. 18 IU Southeast (26-1 RSC), the division winner, and they were one game back of second-place Asbury (Ky.) (21-6 RSC).
Point Park had its nine seniors play the final home games of their careers. That group includes six pitchers and three position players, all of whom have played a big part during their time with the Pioneers.
POINT PARK 10, OAKLAND CITY 1
Nicholas Beardsley went out on his Senior Day with 13 strikeouts over seven innings. That was in the series opener, the 10-1 victory. Beardsley pitched 7.0 innings and did not give up an earned run, and he walked just one.
Point Park pushed the score to 10-1 with five runs in the seventh inning. There were four hits in the inning, including Luis Mujica's single that drove in two and Cole Horew's infield hit that brought home a run. Mujica was 2 for 3.
Antonio Carrillo drove in three runs. He stroked a two-run base hit as the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the third. Jouseph Renovales was 3 for 5 and scored twice.
POINT PARK 4, OAKLAND CITY 3
The Pioneers needed a walkoff win in Saturday's nightcap. Point Park was down 3-1 when it game to bat in the bottom of the seventh of the seven-inning game.
Cole Horew started the rally with a base hit up the middle. Danilo Leon was hit by a pitch, and Jouseph Renovales drew a walk from reliever Jake Fishburn. With one out, Carlos Sanchez tied the game with a base hit that drove in two and moved Renovales to third. Antonio Carrillo came up next, and he lined a single to left. Renovales trotted home for the game winner.
Oakland City Tristan Cummings pitched into the seventh but was taken out after the first two batters reached. Ryan Huber started for Point Park and pitched the first 5.1 innings giving just three hits. Ruben Ramirez earned the win in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out three and walked none.
Point Park had eight hits with Sanchez and Luis Mujica both going 2 for 4.
Ruben Ramirez and Easton Klein pitched the eighth and ninth innings for Point Park without giving up a hit or a run.
POINT PARK 11, OAKLAND CITY 1 (8 INN.)
The Pioneers scored a combined seven runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to win in walkoff fashion again, this time on the 10-run rule. The game was scheduled for nine, but it ended on Jouseph Renovales' RBI single to cap off the four-run eighth.
Point Park had 13 hits with five of them going for doubles. Renovales was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs from the top of the order.
Carlos Sanchez was 2 for 5, including an RBI single in the sixth to make the score 5-1. Dyan Winseck drove in two with a double in the seventh for a 7-1 lead. Cole Horew was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. His base hit in the eighth plated two runs.
Antonio Carrillo was 2 for 4 with three runs, and Luis Mujica was 2 for 4.
Marco Quintanar got his first start coming back from and injury that has kept him out over a month. He worked 2.0 innings giving up two hits and no runs. Christian Negron pitched 2.1 innings of middle relief giving up one run, and Ruben Ramirez pitched the final 2.2 innings scoreless with four strikeouts.
