Point Park rally falls short vs. Rio Grande (Ohio)

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's basketball cut a 19-point deficit down to two points in the final minutes, but University of Rio Grande (Ohio) held on of a 73-69 win at CCAC-Allegheny on Saturday. The RedStorm (14-13, 8-7 RSC) led the River States Conference matchup, 57-38, with 11:16, but the Pioneers (9-14, 4-11 RSC) mounted a comeback.

Jordan Stowe registered career-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Point Park charge. Sherron Schifino added 13 points, and Nate Van put in 16 off the bench to key the comeback as well.

But Rio Grande made its free throws late and came up with a couple of clutch baskets to stay ahead. Despite Sherron Schifino driving in for a layup with 15 seconds left to make the score 71-69, the RedStorm got a breakout dunk from Eythan House on the ensuing inbounds play to clinch it.

Point Park had cut the lead to two points on three occassions in the final two minutes. The first was on Stowe's layup at 1:46 for 66-64. The next was one Schifino's free throw at 69-67 and then finally on Schifino's late layup, the last field goal for the Pioneers.

All of that was setup with a big 3-pointer from Stowe at the 4:16 mark to cut the deficit to four and then moments later a basket and free throw from Van to make the score 64-61 with 3:10 to play.

Point Park was facing a 39-33 deficit at the half. The Pioneers scored the last five points of the half to get the lead under 10 with Van hitting a 3-pointer and Stowe going in for a layup.

The start of the second half was all Rio Grande as it outscored the Pioneers 22-5 over the first 9:44 for their biggest lead of 19 points. Point Park responded with an 11-0 run, which was keyed by going 7 for 7 from the foul line. Jesse Calloway finished off the run with a big basket for two of his eight points.

That gave Point Park a chance and turned things into a close came the rest of the way. But Rio Grande maintained the lead as the last time Point Park was ahead came with 18:33 left in the first half.

Miki Tadic led four Rio Grande players in double digits with 18 points. Khamani Smith had 17 big points off the bench and a big jumper late, and Shiloah Blevins added 16 points. Those three were a combined 12 of 14 from the foul line to keep the lead.

Point Park has another game right away when it goes to Bryant & Stratton Buffalo on Sunday, Feb. 13. Tipoff is 2:00 p.m. Live streaming coverage available with link at PointParkSports.com/Live.
