Box Score

Point Park University is saddened to hear of the passing of Jerry Conboy. He passed away on Feb. 6, 2022 at the age of 94.

Conboy was the Point Park men's basketball head coach from 1969-89. He also served as Point Park's athletic director for much of his tenure. Conboy was a legendary coach for the Pioneers who was well known all around college basketball. He led Point Park to 305 wins in his 20 years and two appearances in the NAIA national tournament.

Conboy recruited several NAIA All-Americans to Point Park, which set the program up for its success. Conboy's teams gained much notoriety for the school, which had been founded less than a decade prior to his arrival. The two national appearances came after NAIA District 18 championships in 1978-79 and 1982-83 beating out much bigger schools in the state. The Pioneers averaged 15 wins per season under Conboy.

In his final year at Point Park in 1988-89, Conboy gave a quote about how he judged success by much more than wins and losses. "A lot of my satisfaction was and is in bringing in young men, working with them and watching them become successful," he said.

Conboy was inducted into five different halls of fame during his lifetime. In addition to being in the inaugural class of the Point Park Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, he was also inducted in the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame and the South Hills Catholic (now Seton-La Salle) Sports Hall of Fame.

Conboy came to Point Park after being the top assistant to the well-known Lefty Driesell at Davidson College. When Driesell went to Maryland in 1969, Conboy came to Point Park. In addition to a long list of successful and talented alumni players, Conboy presided over coaching staffs at Point Park that had very successful and talented assistant coaches as well. That included Ed Fleming, Bobby Cremins, Bob Rager and Larry Anderson among others. Coach Conboy also had a very successful tenure as head coach at South Hills Catholic on the high school level.

Jerry and his wife Pat have five children. He and his wife resided in Bethel Park. Funeral arrangements include a visitation at Beinhauer Family Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 11 from 2-4 p.m. with a service later that night from 6-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be Saturday, Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church.

Coach Conboy was a part of the festivities for the Point Park Men's Basketball 50th Anniversary Celebration during the 2017-18 season. The first year of basketball was 1967-68. An interview from that ceremony is posted below:
