Box Score TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- Point Park University men's basketball is now 6-0 after Monday night's NAIA, non-conference road victory at Washington Adventist (Md.) University, 79-67. The Pioneers (6-0) led the whole way behind Jo Valrie with a career-high 33 points to go along with 17 rebounds and Jalen Stamps with 18 points.
Valrie, in his first game back after missing the last two contests, eclipsed his previous career high of 31 set last year versus Lawrence Tech. The 6-5 junior from Houston, Texas, already had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the first half as the Pioneers were up 43-30 at the break. His double-double included 12 defensive boards on the night.
Stamps, a 5-10 senior point guard from Indianapolis, Ind., made 4 of 8 treys and also dished out four assists. He hit early 3-pointers to get the Pioneers out to leads of 12-2 and 21-7.
Stamps also had some big baskets down the stretch with his 3-pointer bumping the score to 60-50 with 7:30 remaining and his drive to the basket for a 68-60 lead at the 1:55 mark after WAU had cut it to two possessions.
From there, Valrie and Jamisen Smith put the game away at the foul line in the last 90 seconds. Valrie was 16 for 17 from the line on the night while Smith was 4 for 4 on his way to nine points. Valrie made a layup at the end to give him a new career high.
Point Park, which led by as many as 15 in the first half, controlled the rebounds, 48-31. The Pioneers were leading the boards, 27-13, in the first 20 minutes. Jags Jhawar, a 7-2 center, played strong down low with 11 rebounds and three blocks to go along with six points. Nathaniel Van scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
With the domination on the boards and Valrie already with more than 20 points and 10 rebounds by halftime, the Pioneers were in the driver's seat. Valrie scored in a variety of ways the first half to take the game over.
But WAU's home court of The Pitt proved to be one of the tougher places to play and win in the NAIA. Despite being down 13 at the break, James Lee with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals and Mohamed Bundu with 12 points and 9 for 11 free throws brought the Shock back into the game.
Point Park made 19 turnovers -- compared to 11 for WAU -- to lead the Shock to 17 points off turnovers. That made it a six-point game in the last few minutes, but the Pioneers never lost the lead with big plays down the stretch. Point Park was 22 for 26 at the line.
It was the first road game of the year for Point Park. The Pioneers play their next game on the road Nov. 19 at Bryant & Stratton-Rochester.
