Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- No. 7-ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) had a strong offensive night for a 113-84 victory over visiting Point Park University on Tuesday night from the Newt Oliver Arena.
Rio Grande (8-2, 2-0 RSC) shot 61 percent and stayed unbeaten in the conference while Point Park (4-3, 0-1 RSC) dropped its River States Conference opener on the road shooting 39 percent.
Ari Bleda scored 26 points to lead the Pioneers. She made 10 of 20 from the field to get within one of her career-high 27 in last year's playoff win over St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.). Gabriella Legister put in a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Gillian Piccolino with 13 points and three made 3-pointers and Aichata Ballo with 15 points and five assists gave the Pioneers four players in double digits.
The game was at a break-neck pace from the opening tip with Point Park on pace for 100 points through the first quarter but finding itself down 34-25 after 10 minutes.
Rio Grande stayed consistent all night shooting 60 percent the first half and for the entire night overall. That led the RedStorm to a 60-43 lead at the break.
Point Park didn't lose any ground as the third quarter wore on keeping within 17 points down 74-57 midway through the third quarter. Rio Grande did end the third quarter on a bit of a run to lead 92-68 after three.
Rio Grande placed seven scorers in double figures. Three of those were off the bench as Marlee Grinstead's team-high 17 paced an effort of 56 points from the bench players. Starters Kaylee Darnell and Reagan Willingham were in with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Both teams had 45 rebounds to draw even on the glass. Point Park had 15 turnovers compared to 10 for Rio Grande, who turned the turnovers into 22 points off those.
Point Park hurt itself at the foul line going 20 for 33 for 61 percent. Rio Grande was 26 for 33 to provide an edge at the line. Point Park was 4 for 20 from the 3-point arc, where Rio Grande was 3 for 9.
Point Park returns home for another RSC game on Saturday, Dec. 2 versus Shawnee State (Ohio). Tipoff is 1:00 p.m. at CCAC-Allegheny to end a four-game road swing. Point Park plays all six of its scheduled games in December at home where they are 4-0.
