Box Score PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's basketball pulled out an 83-82 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Monday afternoon from CCAC-Allegheny. The Pioneers are now 5-0 after the NAIA, non-conference victory.
Down a point with seven seconds left, Point Park's Jalen Stamps rushed the ball up the sideline. He drove baseline and found teammate Jags Jhawar, who went up for a layup. With the ball going down, Michigan-Dearborn (1-1) was whistled for goaltending for the go-ahead points with 1.1 seconds left.
The Wolverines inbounded the ball around the 7-foot-2 Jhawar, but all they got was a constested, half-court shot that was defended by Point Park's Jamisen Smith.
After all that, the Pioneers remained unbeaten. They were playing with NAIA All-American Jo Valrie, who was out with an injury. Stamps, a fellow All-RSC performer, had a big game with 28 points and eight assists. The final assist led to the winning points.
Nathaniel Van stepped up with 22 points and eight rebounds and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line. Smith turned in 11 points -- and along with Jordan Stowe -- hit some big 3-pointers down the stretch to help in the win. Stowe got the start and produced 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Michigan-Dearborn didn't take its first lead until 5:00 left in the game. That was at 69-68 when Jackson Reynolds scored two of his team-high 27 points.
Smith had a big shot for Point Park and a 76-75 lead with a couple of minutes left. The Pioneers had their chances to go ahead but instead were setttling for an 81-81 tie in the final minutes.
That left the door open for the Wolverines, who inched ahead, 82-81, on Reynolds' free throw with 7 seconds left. The insuing inbounds went to Stamps, who did the rest and got the ball to Jhawar for the win.
The first half solved nothing with a 45-45 tie at the break. Point Park had an early lead of 11-4 but Reynolds got the Wolverines back in the game scoring his team's first 11 points as they trailed 15-11 in the first five minutes.
Point Park's next game is an exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 9 at NCAA Division I Robert Morris (Pa.). The Pittsburgh matchup tips off at 7:00 p.m. at the UPMC Events Center.
