(RV) Point Park earns 105-91 win over Wilberforce to stay unbeaten at 11-0

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- (RV) Point Park University men's basketball secured a 105-91 victory over a Wilberforce (Ohio) University team that would not go away on Thursday night to move its record to 11-0 on the year.

Point Park (11-0, 3-0 RSC) extended its home winning streak to 20 straight games dating back to last year while Wilberforce is 5-10 having played several of the same teams as the Pioneers.

The Pioneers, who are receiving votes in the national poll this week one spot out of the NAIA Top 25, made the plays at the end to hold off a persistent Bulldogs team.

Jo Valrie poured in a career-high 35 points, which included a career-high nine made 3-pointers. He was just two treys off the single-game record at Point Park of 11 held by Gabe Bubon.

Jalen Stamps scored 23 points and dished out six assists to go over the 1,000 points mark at four-year schools. He now has 1,013 combined at NCAA DII Quincy (Ill.) for one year and the last two years at Point Park. Including junior college, Stamps has scored 1,647 points during his college career.

Jamisen Smith had 20 points -- two off his season high -- along with five assists and four rebounds. A graduate transfer who spent the last three years at IU East, Smith went over the 900 points mark and now has 904 during his collegiate career.

Jags Jhawar scored a season-high 13 points and made it a double-double with 13 rebounds and two blocks. He made a dunk midway through the first half to help Point Park build a lead as big as 13 in the opening half. Jordan Stowe had the assist on the play on his way to six points, five assists and eight rebounds in 35 minutes off the bench.

It wasn't easy for Point Park on the night. Wilberforce's Cali Davis was a problem with 35 points, and Josiah Mobley had 22 on 10 for 12 from the field. The Bulldogs were ahead, 16-10, at the under-15:00 media timeout of the first half.

The Pioneers responded with a 14-2 run -- which included two 3-pointers from Stamps and one each from Valrie and Nate Van. That made the score 24-20. Jhawar's later dunk put the score at 34-27.

Point Park built a 42-29 lead on a trey by Valrie -- one his his six treys in the first half alone. But Wilberforce would not go away and was within 58-50 at the break.

The Pioneers had leads of 10 or 12 points in the second half only to have the Bulldogs pull within a couple of possessions on multiple occasions. One of those times was 75-71 at the 10:09 mark.

Wilberforce stayed within striking distance down 91-86 with under 2:00 minutes to go. Then the Pioneers executed some press breaks to lead to easy looks and put the game away.

The first of those clinching plays was a 3-point play by Stamps, which was followed by Smith setting up Stamps for another basket. Next came a layup from Valrie after a nice pass from Stowe, and the Pioneers were up 98-88 with 43 seconds left.

Valrie made his ninth and final 3-pointer to close out the game. He was 9 for 13 from the arc on the night while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Point Park has the weekend off of games and gets back into NAIA non-conference play twice before the end of 2023. That starts with a home date versus Cleary (Mich.) on Tuessday, Dec. 19 at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers welcome Northwestern Ohio on Dec. 30.
