(RV) Point Park puts away UNOH early with 67 the first half, runs record to 13-0

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- (RV) Point Park University men's basketball scored 67 points in the first half to roll its way to a 13-0 record on Saturday.

The Pioneers (13-0, 3-0 RSC) got out to a 67-37 halftime lead over Northwestern Ohio and piled on a 19-6 run out of the break in a 108-71 victory at CCAC-Allegheny. The NAIA, non-conference win gave the Pioneers their 22nd straight home victory.

Point Park, which is currently "receiving votes" just outside the NAIA Top 25 Poll, remained one of five unbeaten teams in the NAIA and surpassed No. 1-ranked Grace (Ind.) (12-0) for the best record in the country. The Lancers play Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. ET for a chance to match the Pioneers.

Jamisen Smith scored a career-high 26 points and led a shooting barrage from the Pioneers. Point Park made 13 3-pointers in the first half connecting on a blistering 54 percent (13 for 24) the first 20 minutes. Point Park ended up with a season-high 17 treys on the day.

Smith was 6 for 9 from deep to surpass his previous career high of 25 while playing for IU East last year. He was well on his way to beating his previous Point Park high of 22 with 19 points and 5 for 7 from the arc in the first half alone.

The halftime stat sheet read like a full game for many teams -- 67 total points with Smith 19, Jalen Stamps 17, Nathaniel Van 13, Jo Valrie 10 and Nazareth Fisher eight off the bench.

Iin the end, Stamps finished with 21 points, seven assists and three treys, Valrie had 20 points, nine rebounds and four treys and Van tallied 17 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three 3-pointers. Fisher added 15 points and six rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting.

It was a long-range assault from the beginning with Smith and Valrie both connecting from deep for an 8-2 lead a few minutes after the tip.

UNOH got as close as 22-16, but Point Park ran away with it from there. A quick run of 8-0 was ignited with treys from Stamps and Van, and Fisher capped off the run with a putback basket inside for a 30-16 lead.

A dunk by Jo Valrie -- off a nice fast-break pass from Jordan Stowe -- and then a trey by Valrie made the score 50-25 with just under 5:00 left in the half.

Stamps punctuated the first-half display with a 3-pointer near the buzzer to push the scoreboard to 67 points through 20 minutes.

The Pioneers kept the foot on the gas the first 5 minutes of the second half with its 19-6 run. Valrie started that with a 3-pointer to kick things back up. Valrie hit another trey, Smith connected from outside and inside of the arc and Stamps drove in for a couple of baskets to keep the pedal down.

Valrie capped off that spurt on another dunk -- this time off an assist from Van -- and the Pioneers had doubled up the Racers once again, 86-43, at the under 15:00 media timeout.

Point Park was ahead, 97-52, with 8:09 to go. That was on a 3-point play by Fisher and at that point the last of the starters who were still in came out of the game.

Point Park had 20 assists on the day with Stamps picking up a team-high seven. He had six of those in the first half alone.

The rebounds were total domination by Point Park, 63-34. The No. 1 rebounding team in the NAIA across all categories had almost as many offensive rebounds (22) as UNOH had defensive rebounds (23).

Point Park held UNOH to 36-percent shooting (29 for 80) to improve upon its No. 3-ranked field-goal defense in the NAIA entering the day at .378. The Pioneers clamped down on UNOH's Ryan Archey, who scored 7 points on 3 for 11, for 10 below his average.

The Pioneers cleared the bench early and stayed under their season-high of 114 points versus Fisher (Nov. 3) but improved upon their No. 6-ranked scoring offense in the NAIA that was averaging 91.7 ppg coming in.

Point Park plays its next four games on the road beginning with a trip to Midway (Ky.) and IU Southeast on Jan. 4 and 6. That picks back up River States Conference play were the Pioneers are 3-0 RSC.
