(RV) Point Park wins first two at WVU Tech

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- (RV) Point Park University won the first two games of its River States Conference baseball series at WVU Tech on Thursday. The Pioneers (14-5, 7-1 RSC) won by scores of 5-2 and 7-3 at GoMark Ballpark, home of the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

The Pioneers hit four home runs throughout the day, had two solid starting pitching performances and had the bullpen hammer down each game. The series concludes on Friday with the final game of nine innings scheduled for 12:00 p.m. With rain in the forecast, stay tuned for any updates.

GAME 1 -- POINT PARK 5, WVU TECH 2
The Pioneers were ahead from the start but had to hold on in the ninth inning for the opening win. Carlos Martinez was 4 for 4 with two runs scored, and Jared Campbell was 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the offense.

Easton Klein (2-2) pitched 7.0 innings allowing just one run to give the bullpen a 5-1 lead. Klein, a senior right-hander, struck out eight, walked three and allowed just four hits. Klein took a shutout into the sixth inning until a double, a groundout and a sacrifice fly made the score 4-1.

The start of the game was ideal for Point Park. Martinez had a base hit, and Jared Campbell smashed a two-run homer for a 2-0 lead after two batters. Those two were at it again in the third when Martinez led off with a triple and came home on Campbell's deep drive to center for a sacrifice fly.

A 4-0 lead resulted after Jean Santos doubled and scored on Martinez's base hit in the fifth. Justin Oakley blasted a solo homer in the eighth for an insurance run and a 5-1 lead.

Ramon Rodriguez came on for Klein in the eighth. He worked a 1-2-3 eighth before turning over to the ninth. His cousin Sebastian Rodriguez came in with the bases loaded and one out. Sebastian struck out the final two batters to earn the save.

GAME 2 -- POINT PARK 7, WVU TECH 3
The Pioneers were down, 1-0, when they came to bat in the top of the fifth of the seven-inning game in game two. But the Pioneers exploded and got all seven of their runs to take the doubleheader sweep.

Joathan Rivera (3-1) had another good start going 5.0 innings and allowing just one run as the Point Park starter. What was a very low scoring had a double and a two-out base hit through the right side in the WVU Tech second inning. That 1-0 lead for the Golden Bears lasted until the fifth.

The run support for Rivera's teammates was not there until the fifth. That's when Isaac Santana gave a spark with a one-out double down the line in left field. Carlos Burroughs came up next with a big single to center to tie the game 1-1.

The Pioneers were just getting started as Jean Santos and Carlos Martinez both followed with base hits to bring in a run. With two runners on, Jared Campbell came next with a three-run homer. That put the Pioneers up 5-2.

A base hit by Eddie Javier, Jr., made WVU Tech go to a pitching change. Isaac Wengert took a shutout into the fifth put was charged with six runs in 4.1 innings. The new pitcher was greeted by Michali Brito with a two-run homer in the second batter he faced.

WVU Tech got as close as 7-3 with a two-run homer by Thurmond in the bottom of the fifth. But Rivera got a double play to keep things there and complete his outing of 5.0 innings.The Pioneers closed out the game with double plays to end the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Jose Moreno pitched the sixth inning. Two runners got on, but a 5-4-3 double play from Eddie Javier, Jr., to Omar Morillo to Isaac Santana got out of the jam.

Sebastian Rodriguez pitched the seventh for Point Park. With a couple of runners on, a 4-6-3 double play from Morillo to Carlos Martinez to Santana to finish things off. It was the same combination that ended the fifth.

Martinez had another two hits for a total of six on the day. Jared Campbell had four hits, two homers and five RBIs in the doubleheader. Santana and Burroughs each had a pair of hits in the second game.
