(RV) Point Park, Midway (Ky.) split first two games

MIDWAY, Ky. -- (RV) Point Park University and Midway (Ky.) splits Games 1 & 2 of their weekend series on Friday with the Pioneers winning the opener, 13-4, and the Eagles winning the nightcap, 3-2. The matchup is for first place in the RSC standings with Point Park now at 26-10 overall, 16-4 RSC and Midway still one game behing at 21-17, 15-5 RSC.

The final game of the series will be Saturday with a 12 p.m. start. The following is a recap of Friday's games.

GAME 1 -- POINT PARK 13, MIDWAY 4

The Pioneers shook off an early deficit of 2-0 with 17 hits and three home runs to pull away with the first game. The Pioneers put together four runs on five hits in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Point Park exploded for five runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-3. That inning had three homers -- Eddie Javier, Jr., led off with a solo job. Four batters later Jordon Campbell went deep for a three-run shot. His brother Jared Campbell made it back to back wih a solo bomb.

Isaac Santana had a big game going 3 for 6 with a double and two RBIs. There were six Point Park players with more than one hit. That included Jordon Campbell 2 for 5 with a double, homer and five RBIs, Omar Morillo with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Justin Oakley 2 for 4, Carlos Martinez 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI and Carlos Burroughs 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI triple.

Easton Klein pitched 7.0 innings to get the victory and improve to 7-3 on the year. He gave up two runs in the first inning -- one of which was unearned -- and allowed just one more run the rest of the. That was on Grant Hotchkiss' solo homer in the third.

Ramon Rodriguez and Kenneth Rolon pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, for Point Park.

Midway starter Blake Kincaid took the loss. He pitched 5.1 innings and was tagged with nine runs, 10 hits and two homers. The five runs came in the fifth.

GAME 2 -- MIDWAY 3, POINT PARK 2

Midway had just four hits, but three of them drove in runs as the Eagles took the Game 2. Grant Hotchkiss hit two solo homers to give him three on the day and five for the year. The first one gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first.

Midway later took a 2-0 lead on Ayden Sciandra's bases-loaded single in the fourth. The Eagles left the bases full but still were in control through 4.0 innings complete.

The Pioneers bashed two homers in the fifth to tie the score. Those came from Michali Brito and Isaac Santana as the Pioneers hit back to back homers for the second time on the day.

The home runs greeted the Eagles' bullpen after Midway starter Owen Clark had pitched the first 4.0 innings scoreless. He did give up four walks and struck out five in addition to three hits allowed. But the Pioneers left the bases loaded in the first and also the fourth to fail to crack the scoreboad versus Clark.

Hotchkiss provided the eventual winning run in the fifth inning. His second solo homer made it 3-2. Both homers came versus Point Park starter Javier Cardoso, who took the loss in 5.0 innings. He gave up four hits and only two earned runs.

Sebastian Rodriguez pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for Point Park.

The backend of Midway's bullpen closed out the game with Grant Stone and Jesse Komoroski covering the final 2.1 innings without giving up a run.

The Pioneers got the potential tying run to second base with no outs in the seventh. That was after Jared Campbell led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. But Komoroski got the next three in a row to close out the save.
