Cardoso's 1-hitter splits Day 1 versus Oakland City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PITTSBURGH -- Javier Cardoso threw a 1-hitter to carry (RV) Point Park University baseball to a doubleheader split versus Oakland City (Ind.) University on Thursday afternoon at Point Park Field at Green Tree Park. The Pioneers (31-14, 19-7 RSC) won the second game, 3-0, behind Cardoso's latest gem.

A sophomore right-hander from Miami, Fla., Cardoso carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He allowed a base hit to start the inning, but that's all the Mighty Oaks (30-18, 13-13 RSC) got in the game. Cardoso finished with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. He went all 7.0 innings as scheduled in the second game of a River States Conference doubleheader.

Cardoso had to protect a 1-0 lead for most of the game. The Pioneers scored in the top of the first with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a base hit and then ultimately a sacrifice fly from Michali Brito. But that was all Point Park going into the last of the sixth, it's final time at bat.

Omar Morillo added some much-welcomed insurance runs with his two-run double down the line in left field to make the score 3-0 through six. He was the third Point Park hitter in a row to reach after Carlos Martinez singled with two outs and nobody on and Carlos Burroughs was hit by a pitch.

Morillo's double closed the book on Oakland City starter Ben Simmons, who gave up three runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked three.

Oakland City came away with a 3-2 victory in the series opener to start the day. Gehring Tenhumberg pitched 8.0 strong innings to get the victory. He left after giving up a leadoff double to Jared Campbell in the bottom of the ninth.

Two batters later, Isaac Santana blasted a two-run homer to make the score 3-2 with one out. But reliever Evan Price, who gave up the homer in the second batter he faced, regrouped to retire the next two and earn the save.

Point Park had plenty of chances with runner's in scoring position virtually all day. But the Pioneers could not come up with the big hit until the ninth.

Easton Klein pitched into the sixth inning as the Pioneers' starter but was saddled with the loss despite just two earned runs charged. He struck out four and walked none, and two of the six hits he gave up were triples that brought in runs.

After rain prevented Game 3 of the series being played on Friday, it will instead be played on Saturday, April 29. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Point Park Field at Green Tree Park.
