(RV) Point Park splits with 17-0 win, 5-3 loss to OCU

Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- (RV) Point Park University baseball had to settle for a split on Sunday versus Ohio Christian University. The Pioneers pounded the Trailblazers, 17-0, then lost 5-3 at Wild Things Park. The third and final game of the series is Monday back at Wild Things Park at 12:00 p.m.

Point Park (19-8, 12-2 RSC) scored in every inning to get the lopsided win in the opener. Ohio Christian (10-20, 7-7 RSC) scored in only one inning and held on to take the middle game of the series.

GAME 1 -- POINT PARK 17, OHIO CHRISTIAN 0 (7 INN.)

The Pioneers scored all six times they came to bat to end the series opener after just seven innings on the run rule. Already up 7-0, five runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth set the final.

Point Park had 12 hits with four doubles and two homers. Eleven different players had a hit with Jordon and Jared Campbell leading the way with two hits apiece. They went for back to back homers in the fourth inning to bump the score to 7-0.

Michali Brito drove in three runs, including a pair on a two-run double in the fifth. J.M. Fay had a couple of RBIs on sacrifice flies, the first of which came in the fifth to make the score 11-0.

Point Park sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth with Jordon Campbell and Luis Gonzalez driving in runs with base hits to highlight the rally. Jordon Campbell was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Carlos Martinez had four RBIs. His two-run double in the third made the score 5-0. Jared Campbell ended up 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. He delivered a run-scoring single in the first to send home Omar Morillo, who was on base three times and scored three runs.

Easton Klein cruised to another victory in conference pitching the first 6.0 innings scoreless. He allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked one. Klein faced only two batters over the minimum in the outing facing only three each in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. A pickoff in the third and a double play in the fourth killed potential rallies.

Kenneth Rolon pitched the seventh inning to finish off the combined shutout. That gave the Point Park pitching staff its fourth shutout in a row and a streak of 30.0 straight innings within giving up a run.

OHIO CHRISTIAN 5, POINT PARK 3

The Trailblazers got five runs in the third inning and held the lead the rest of the way. The only inning all day where Ohio Christian got any runs provided the difference.

A double by Bryant Lung started the inning. A bunt, a walk and a base hit by Carter Smith scored the first run. Two batters later, Colton brought in another run with a single.

With the bases loaded and one out, Point Park starting pitcher Joathan Rivera got a ground ball, but the Pioneers could not get an out as a third run scored. A hit batter and another groundout that could have ended the inning made the score 5-0.

Point Park scored in two innings but did not have its comeback go the full way. The Pioneers cut the lead to 5-1 in the fourth but left the bases loaded.

The fifth inning had a great start with Jordon Campbell walking and Jared Campbell following with a two-run homer.

But 5-3 was as close as the Pioneers got with Tanner Popp pitching all 7.0 innings to get the win. He survived three walks and two hit batters and limited the hits to six. Jared Campbell and Michali Brito were both 2 for 4 for the Pioneers.

Sebastian Rodriguez three 4.0 innings of scoreless relief for Point Park. He blanked OCU the last four innings on three hits. Rivera gave up five hits in his 3.0 innings.
