GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Point Park University men's golf registered its highest team finish in five years by placing third of 17 teams Thursday at the Grove City Fall Invitational. Troy Loughry led the Pioneers winning first place individually as the tournament medalist.
The Pioneers shot 312 as a team, which was five shots off the team winner Grove City with a 307. Westminster was second at 309.
Loughry got a hometown win as the native of Grove City, Pa., earned his first victory since transferring to Point Park. The two-time NJCAA All-American from Butler County CC shot even-par 72 on Thursday to win by two strokes. There were 100 players in the field with Loughry the only one at level par.
Anthony Santilli tied for sixth place shooting 77. There were six players who tied with that score. Tyler Hillard was just outside the Top 25 shooting 80 to get into a tie for 27th. Tharcisse Kalinda shot 83 as the fourth and final Point Park player in the field. That tied for 42nd putting all four Pioneers scorers in the top half of the field.
"I am happy with the progress we are making as a team," said Point Park head coach Gabe Bubon. "The guys know we could have won the tournament, but this is part of the process. This should make them even more hugry to keep improving. Troy is going to keep getting better, and the sky is the limit for him."
The last time Point Park had a finish as high as third was the 2018-19 season when they won the same tournament at Grove City and placed second at Clarion.
Point Park will go on the road this weekend to the Earlham College Forest Hill Invitational in Richmond, Ind. The two-day tournament is Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 16-17.
