Box Score PITTSBURGH -- No. 2-ranked Carnegie Mellon University scored only one goal of its own on Saturday versus Point Park University, but it was enough to win the matchup of local women's soccer teams at Highmark Stadium.
The Tartans, highly ranked in NCAA Division III, got a goal from Catharine MacNichol in the 16th minute. Moments later, an own goal increased the lead to 2-0. Although Point Park (4-3-2, 1-0 RSC) held things there the final 83 minutes, CMU came away with the victory. Both of the goals came on corner kicks.
Carnegie Mellon improved to 8-0 with its eighth win in a row. The Tartans are being mentioned as possible national title contenders in their division. It was the seventh shutout in a row for CMU.
For their part, Point Park withstood a 14-2 shot disadvantage and also turned away many corner-kick opportunities from CMU. In the first half, the Tartans led in shots, 4-2, with both of Point Park's shots on the day coming the first 45 minutes.
Point Park's shots came from Mireya Rojas and Holly Pascoe with a couple of nice opportunities in the first half. But both times, CMU starting goalkeeper Maddie Kellogg made big saves to keep Point Park off the board. For the Pioneers, there was not many oppotunities after that.
Digging in on defense, the Pioneers did not bend on the scoreboard despite another 10 shots by CMU after halftime. What's more, Point Park dealt with 13 corner kicks the final 45 minutes -- and 18 for the game -- but did not give any more ground.
Gillian Bierhals started in goal for Point Park. All four shots she faced came on goal, and she made two saves. Maggie Pappas and the defense in front of her pitched a second-half shutout. She faced 10 shots with three on goal and made all three saves.
Point Park has one game in the next coming week, which is their next game Sept. 30 at IU East. The River States Conference matchup will kick off at 2:00 p.m. in Richmond, Ind.
Saturday's matchup with Carnegie Mellon was the first one between the local opponents. It was added to the schedule when Oakland City cancelled its season as the regularly scheduled opponent for the day.
