Box Score OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- Jamisen Smith hit for a career-high 27 points to go over the 1,000-career points milestone, and Jo Valrie added 30 points and 12 rebounds to lift Point Park University men's basketball to an 87-83 road win over Oakland City (Ind.) University on Thursday night.
Jalen Stamps chipped in 19 points and four assists to help the Pioneers (15-1, 5-1 RSC) hang on to the River States Conference victory. Point Park was ahead by as much as 21 points early in the second half only to have Oakland City get within one in the final minute.
Nazareth Fisher made a pair of clutch free throws with 14 seconds left to give some breathing room for Point Park, 86-83. The Pioneers came up with a defensive stop on the other end, and Valrie cleared his 12th board of the game with two seconds remaining.
Valrie was fouled and made 1 of 2 at the line before the Mighty Oaks missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Smith, who is in his first year at Point Park since transferring from fellow RSC school IU East, now has 1,001 points in his college career. With his 27 points on Thursday -- which surpassed his previous career high of 26 earlier this year -- he has scored 266 points so far at Point Park. That is a career high in a single season for the 6-3 guard from Indianapolis, Ind., who scored a combined 735 points during his years at IU East and IU Northwest before that.
Smith was hot from the beginning making 5 for 5 from 3-point range in the first half on his way to 21 points the first 20 minutes. He connected on 8 for 9 from the field the first half to push the Pioneers to a 51-37 lead at the break.
Valrie started the second half on a tear with a 3-point play and the putback of a missed jumper within the first minute. After baskets by Smith, Stamps and Nathaniel Van, the Pioneers had their biggest lead of 62-41. Moments later, Valrie threw down a thunderous alley-oop dunk off an assist from Stamps. That made the score, 64-48, at the under-15:00 media timeout.
Things changed from there with Oakland City steadily getting back into the game. Sam Muller with 23 points and 16 rebounds and Josh Williams 15 points off the bench powered the Mighty Oaks comeback. Muller's layup at 9:51 made it a nine-point game, 70-61.
Valrie made a trey to build a 77-67 lead for the Pioneers at the 6:32 mark. But Oakland City did not go away. The Mighty Oaks pulled within 78-74 on a dunk by Abdul Wurie with 4:35 to play.
A big play for Point Park was Valrie scoring off an offensive rebound for an 81-76 lead at the at the 2:48 mark. It was the last field goal for the Pioneers, who made enough free throws in the final minutes to win.
Valrie hit a pair to stay up five. But two baskets by Muller trimmed Point Park's lead to 84-83 with under 20 seconds left. The Mighty Oaks avoided an intentional foul and sent Fisher to the line for Point Park. He had missed two on the last trip but came up big going 2 for 2 for a three-point lead. Oakland City was stopped on its final two possessions.
Smith's career-high 27 came on just 16 shot attempts, all of which were from the floor. He made 11 of them while playing all 40 minutes along with Stamps.
The Pioneers continue their road trip at Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT. The RSC matchup will take place in Owensboro, Ky. Point Park will return home for an MLK Day home game versus Bryant & Stratton-Rochester (N.Y.) on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
