Box Score CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- Point Park University men's basketball has won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in school history. The No. 21-ranked Pioneers won at Ohio Christian University, 75-72, on Tuesday night to improve to 20-2 on the season. The River States Conference victory puts Point Park at 9-2 RSC.
The Pioneers were 23-7 last year, their first under head coach Kevin Reynolds, to reach the 20-win plateau for the first time in 16 seasons. Now before the end of January, the Pioneers are back there again. It's the eighth 20-win season in team history, and the only other time the Pioneers did that in consecutive seasons was 1978-79 and 1979-80.
Jalen Stamps scored 26 points in the victory to give him 1,003 in a Point Park uniform. In just 51 games since transferring in last year, the 5-10 point guard from Indianapolis, Ind., has averaged 19.7 ppg. That makes him one of the select few players in program history to eclipse 1,000 points in just two years.
Stamps hit a 3-pointer with 4:39 remaining to break a 60-60 tie and give him 1,000 at Point Park. He then assisted Nazareth Fisher for a breakaway dunk for a 65-60 lead on the next possession.
But a technical foul on the dunk swung momentum OCU's way, and the Trailblazers went on to build a 68-66 lead on a 3-pointer by Elisha Moore with just 2:36 to play.
The Pioneers had more clutch baskets as Stamps followed with a jumper to tie things up at the other end. Point Park got a defensive stop, and Jordan Stowe cleared the rebound, one of his nine boards on the night. Jamisen Smith made good on the offensive end with a smooth jumper.
Stowe was at it again as his steal gave the ball back to the Pioneers. Jo Valrie converted a jumper for a 72-68 lead with 48 seconds left. Valrie scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock to pad Point Park's lead to 75-72 with just six seconds remaining.
Ohio Christian (10-12, 5-6 RSC), which stayed in the game all night with its 10 made 3-pointers, could not find the tying one as the Pioneers held on for the key RSC road win.
Nathaniel Van posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers. Rebounds were a big factor with Point Park leading the glass, 47-28.
Point Park shot a solid 46 percent on the night and held Ohio Christian to 37 percent, right around its field-goal defensive average for the season. The Trailblazers were in it the whole way thanks to five starters in double figures and the outside shooting.
Moore had 18 points and made 6 for 7 from long range to lead OCU. Levi Seller was next with 17 points with Devon Miller and Titus Burns 12 apiece and Jimmy Salamone 11.
Point Park got out to a 14-6 lead in the early going, its biggest lead of the night. Ohio Christian caught some fire with six treys in the first half. Stamps had to hit a 3-pointer of his own -- one of his four on the night -- to pull the Pioneers even 34-34 at the break.
Ohio Christian worked its biggest lead of 46-40 with 14:06 left. Point Park scored the next nine points in a row to go in front. The Pioneers later fell behind 60-55 with 7:06 to play only to reel off a 10-0 run, which was capped off by Fisher's dunk and the technical.
At 9-2 RSC, the Pioneers remain with the same conference record as fellow RSC East Division leader Shawnee State (Ohio) (15-6, 9-2 RSC). Point Park will have another big RSC East road game when it goes to (RV) WVU Tech (15-5, 8-3 RSC) on Saturday.
