Pioneers rally to force overtime, fall in OT at Alice Lloyd (Ky.), 77-73

Box Score

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. -- Despite a career-high 32 points from Gillian Piccolino, four starters in double figures and fourth-quarter rally, Point Park University women's basketball fell in overtime, 77-73, at Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College on Saturday.

The Pioneers (16-8, 9-6 RSC) were trailing by nine entering the fourth quarter of the River States Conference East Division matchup. Alice Lloyd (11-15, 6-10 RSC) had built on its lead of 41-37 at the half to carry a 56-47 lead into the fourth.

Point Park was still down 61-52 with 5:35 left. But a furious rally and a 14-5 run to end regulation brought the Pioneers to overtime. Ari Bleda started the rally with a layup. A trey by Piccolino and a 3-point play by Emma Pavelek pulled the Pioneers with 63-60 with 3:12 left.

The Pioneers defense continued to get stops, and the biggest play of the fourth quarter came from Piccolino. When Alice Lloyd missed a free throw with eight seconds left, the Pioneers got the ball to Piccolino at the top of the key, and she made a 3-pointer with under five seconds left to tie the game at 66-66. Alice Lloyd was unable to get off a shot as the game went into overtime.

Hannah Kash, who had 32 points for Alice Lloyd to tie for game-high honors, hit a couple of big 3-pointers in OT. The first one started the quarter and the later one gave the Eagles a 74-70 cushion with 2:01 remaining. The Eagles made jsut enough free throws from then on to win.

Piccolino's career high included 11 points in a clutch fourth quarter. She surpassed her previous high of 31 earlier this year. Piccolino made six 3-pointers on the day and also grabbed nine rebounds playing 42 minutes.

Pavelek put in 12 points on 4 for 8 from the field and 3 for 3 at the foul line. Bleda made it a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Aichata Ballo chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, three asssists and three steals off the bench. Fatim Sarr Ndow had a career-high 13 rebounds. That helped make up for the absence of Gabriella Legister, a fellow 6-2 center who averages 14.6 ppg and 11.2 rpg but missed her first game of the season.

It was a battle on the glass with Point Park having a slight edge of 57-55. With both teams shooting under 36 percent, a key factor was free throws with Alice Lloyd making 17 of 22 and Point Park 9 of 18. Both teams made eight 3-pointers.

Point Park enters the final week of the regular season with two home games. The Pioneers host Ohio Christian on Feb. 20 and welcome WVU Tech on Feb. 23 for Senior Night. The matchup with Ohio Christian (19-7, 10-5 RSC) features the Trailblazers in second place in the RSC East Division with Point Park and Shawnee State (Ohio) right behind both at 9-6 RSC.
