No. 17 Point Park moves to 25-2 with home win over Ohio Christian, 84-81

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- No. 17-ranked Point Park University men's basketball pulled out an 84-81 home win over Ohio Christian University on Tuesday night from CCAC-Allegheny.

The Pioneers improved to 25-2 overall, 14-2 RSC with the victory and have a chance to win the River States Conference regular-season championship in their final scheduled game Friday night at home versus WVU Tech.

Jo Valrie scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Jalen Stamps poured in 21 points and dished nine assists to power the Pioneers to their 27th victory in their last 28 home games dating back to last year.

Nazareth Fisher had another big game off the bench with 12 points and 14 rebounds, which included many big plays down the stretch.

It was a team effort for the Pioneers with Nathaniel Van, Jags Jhawar and Jordan Stowe combining for 23 points and 19 rebounds on the night. Jamisen Smith added six points in his first game back.

Point Park needed that effort to come back from a six-point deficit midway through the second half. The Pioneers were ahead at the half, 43-38, and were still leading, 59-54, with 13:06 left.

Then Levi Seiler and Titus Burns started to bring Ohio Christian back. Seiler finished with 35 points and was 7 for 14 from 3-point range while Burns added 21.

Those two powered what was a 13-2 run that put the Trailblazers up, 67-61, with just over nine minutes left.

Baskets by Valrie and Fisher got Point Park going on its come back. A few plays later, Stowe hit a 3-pointer, which was followed right after with a trey from Stamps to tie the score at 71-71 with 5:37 left.

OCU then hit a pair of 3-pointers, but Point Park stayed close thanks to a couple of buckets from Fisher, and it was 77-75 with the Trailblazers on top.

Then Stamps took matters into his own hands. A solo 7-0 run by Stamps started with his 3-pointer, continued with a clutcher jumper at the elbow and finished with a strong drive to the hoop. That put Point Park in control, 82-77, with 1:59 to go.

Point Park didn't quite put the game away at the foul line and thus had to make two final defensive stands with the score 84-81. The first of those was Stowe blocking a potential game-tying 3-point shot in the corner by Seiler. The second was defending a final rush up the floor for a last-second trey attempt.

The game had had 11 lead changes and six ties. With both teams shooting 41 percent, a big factor was rebounds with Point Park dominating, 58-37. The Pioneers had 23 offensive rebounds for an 18-6 edge in second-chance points.

Point Park will host WVU Tech for Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. It is the final regular season game with the RSC Championship next week. The Pioneers will be one of the top seeds as the RSC East Division leader.

Point Park has a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament if it can win the overall RSC regular-season championship as the RSC points system leader when all regular-season games are complete.
