Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- (RV) Point Park University scored the final 10 runs of the game to win going away, 13-4, over Midway (Ky.) University on Thursday from Wild Things Park. The Pioneers (13-7, 6-1 RSC) won the opening game of the River States Conference baseball series after erasing a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the sixth.
Point Park, which is "receiving votes" in this week's NAIA Baseball Top 25 Poll, will play Midway (12-12, 4-2 RSC) two more times on Friday to conclude the series. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. The start time was pushed back an hour due to expected rain. The Pioneers take a seven-game win streak into Friday's games.
The Pioneers scored those 10 decisive runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The turning point was the six-run sixth, which turned the score from a 4-3 deficit to a 9-4 advantage. Three more came in the seventh and another for good measure in the eighth.
It was a great start for the Pioneers with Isaac Santana's three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Point Park's cleanup man had five RBIs on the day.
But Midway starting pitcher Owen Clark kept things there long enough for the Eagles to go in front, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth. Britten Robinson had the big hit, a two-run double for the lead.
Midway had scored a couple of unearned runs off Point Park starter Javier Cardoso in the fourth to get on the board. Robinson was the last batter Cardoso faced. He threw 5.1 innings with four runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks.
Jose Moreno came on to get the next two batters and strand Robinson at second. When Point Park exploded for six in the bottom half, Moreno came in line for the win. Especially when he retired four of the five batters he faced to keep a clean outing of 1.1 IP.
Point Park sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth. The Pioneers had four hits, walked three times and took advantage of an error in the inning. Midway needed three different pitchers to get through it.
Michali Brito led off with a walk, the last batter faced by Clark. Doubles by Luis Gonzalez and Carlos Martinez kept things going. Omar Morillo stroked a single, and after an error, Chris Williams drove in a run with an infield hit later on.
Already up 9-4, the Pioneers added insurance runs in the seventh on Santana's two-run single and in the eighth on an RBI double by Eddie Javier Jr.
Morillo was 3 for 6 from the top of the lineup. Javier Jr., Jared Campbell and Santana all had two hits as the next hitters in the order. Crixtian Taveras was 2 for 4 from the No. 9 spot. Campbell scored three runs and walked three times along with Brito.
The late offense was more than enough for Ethan Parker to close out the game on the mound. The sophomore righty threw the final 2.1 innings in a non-save situation. He did not allow a hit or run, struck out five and walked one.
Clark had a no-decision in 5.0 innings as the Midway starter. He retired 10 of 11 batters from the end of the second to the end of the fifth.
