No. 1 Freed-Hardeman outlasts No. 8 Point Park in NAIA national tourney 2nd round

Box Score

HENDERSON, Tenn. -- Point Park University's incredible men's basketball season came to an end at 30-3 overall after Saturday's loss at No. 1 seed Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University in the NAIA National Championship Second Round.

The No. 8 seed Pioneers lost to the host Lions, 84-67, to fall one game shy of advancing to the national tournament final site of Kansas City for the round of 16. Point Park had its 11-game win streak snapped. The Pioneers did not lose all of February and were a few minutes away from making it to the third week of March since their last loss.

Point Park's Jo Valrie had another strong game with 25 points. Nathaniel Van scored 13, and Jalen Stamps had 11 and eight rebounds. Nazareth Fisher led the glass with 13 boards.

It was a matchup of two of the top 15 teams in the country as judged by the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll with Point Park No. 15 and Freed-Hardeman (28-4) ranked No. 5.

The Pioneers did not play the part of a usual No. 8 seed giving the top seed in the region all they could handle until the final minutes. The contest included nine ties and eight lead changes and was a two-possession game until the final media timeout.

In the end, Freed-Hardeman rode a couple of second-half runs -- including one at the end that extended the final margin out to double digits. The first 36 minutes had neither team lead by more than a couple of baskets. Outside of a few brief moments early in the second half.

A nip and tuck first half had Point Park manage leads of 19-18 and 36-34. Both of those were on treys by Stamps. Jamisen Smith, who had all nine of his points in the first half, hit a jumper to keep the Pioneers in front, 38-36, at the break.

With FHU's 23-19 lead the biggest for either team the first 20 minutes, the Lions got out to a 49-41 advantage early in the second. That was after an 8-0 run.

Point Park responded scoring the next nine points in a row to revert things right back to being a close game just moments later. Fisher started that run with a putback layup as he continued his efforts on the rebounds.

Valrie was 7 for 7 on free throws during that 9-0 run to get the Pioneers back in the game. He got to the line all night with some relentless attacks on the rim. Valrie made 12 of 12 free throws on the night. His drive snatched the lead back for Point Park, 52-51, with 12:15 to go.

Then Geraldo Lane caught fire for the Lions. The 6-5 guard scored 26 points off the bench with 17 of them coming in the second half. Most of those were the last 10 minutes. His strong play resulted in a 62-54 lead with 8:05 remaining.

Point Park did not go away with Valrie and Van both hitting from the outside to keep the Pioneers within 66-60 at the 5:07 mark. Jordan Stowe put back a missed shot to stay at two possessions down 68-62 at the final media timeout. That was with 3:56 left.

From there, the Pioneers did not hit the key shots as FHU rode the momentum and the home crowd to victory. FHU had four players in double digits, including three starters.

Quan Lax had 13 points on some big drives. Ryley McClaran hit three big treys on his way to 11 points. Hunter Scurlock had 17 points and although battling foul trouble came back in late in the game to help Lane finish it off.

For Point Park, the 30-3 record set a program record for most wins in a single season. The seniors were 53-10 the last two seasons combined and brought the Pioneers back to the NAIA national tournament for the first time in 17 years. Friday's first-round victory over Texas College, 84-71, was Point Park's first national tournament win in 23 years.
