Point Park battles to earn split against SMWC; win game one 4-2

KENNEDY TOWNSHIP., Pa. – Facing one of the best teams in the conference, Point Park did not let that deter them as they managed to get a huge split against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Ind.). The Pioneers took game one 4-2 where key hits and baserunning was the difference. The Pomeroy's battled back though to get a game two win to escape the sweep as they won 9-3.

 

Game 1:

Back-to-back-back hits in the second inning followed up by a sacrifice fly was the difference for Point Park as they took game one by a score of 4-2.

The Pioneers started the second inning with a leadoff walk by Sydnie Reese. That was just the beginning for Point Park.

With Reese at first, Mia Arndt laid down a bunt that she was able to beat out for the infield single advancing Reese to second. 

Bella Magliocco followed up with a hit of her own to center field to score Reese from second. Arndt advanced on the throw to home to reach third base while Magliocco also took an extra base on the throw. Point Park was now up 1-0 following the single by Magliocco.

The Point Park offense continued to shine as Hayley O'Neil laid down a bunt of her own that she also beat out for the infield single which scored Arndt making the score 2-0. 

Point Park got their final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by Remi Koi to score Magliocco from third.

SMWC got back a run in the fourth inning as Jasmine Kinzer hit a two-out solo home run to centerfield to eliminate the shut out. Kinzer's solo shot made the score 3-1 still in favor of Point Park.

The Pomeroys got their second and final run of the game in the top of the sixth as Lyric Krause led the inning off with a single to right field. Abby Broughton entered the game as a pinch runner for Lyric Krause. Broughton scored two batters later on a single to centerfield by Kinzer making the score 3-2.

Point Park tacked on their final run of the game in the sixth inning as Arndt reached on a single to right field where she then stole second base. Magliocco advanced Arndt to third on a single of her own to the third basemen. 

With Arndt on third, sophomore Bre Pies entered the game as a pinch hitter where she then hit a single to right field to score Arndt pushing the Pioneers lead to two.

The Pomeroys had chances to score in the seventh as they managed to get two runners on but they were not able to capitalize allowing the Pioneers to walk away with a 4-2 win in game one.

Jaylyn Mullenax started in the circle for the Pioneers and went all 7.0 innings giving up 10 hits but only allowing two runs as the Point Park defense worked behind her. Mullenax picked up five strikeouts in the win to move to 5-7 on the year.

Mia Arndt led the Point Park offense as she went 3 for 3 with two runs scored to be the top producer for the Pioneers. Bella Magliocco also had a huge impact for the Pioneers going 2 for 2 with a run and a RBI as well.

 

Game 2:

Point Park started the scoring in game two but the Pomeroy's offense exploded for nine runs to beat the Pioneers 9-3.

The Pioneers struck first once again as Mia Arndt beat out a groundball to the shortstop for a two-out infield single. Arndt then swiped second to get into scoring position. 

Savannah Lee then stepped into the box where she ripped a single to the center field fence to score Arndt from second making giving the Pioneers the first run of the game and the lead.

SMWC got a run of their own as Jaselyn Conn hit a solo home run over the center field fence to tie the score at 1-1.

The Pomeroys picked up three more runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1 over Point Park. 

Point Park answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Arndt started the inning off with a triple to centerfield that knocked off the top of the fence to put her in scoring position. 

Lee followed up the triple by Arndt with a hard groundball to the pitcher that allowed Arndt to score bringing the score within three as the Pioneers trailed 5-2.

Sydnie Reese drew a walk following the groundout RBI by Lee. Allyson Leidy entered the game as pinch runner for Reese. 

Leidy advance to second base on a wild pitch to put herself in scoring position.

Bre Pies entered the game as a pinch hitter where she came through just like she did in the first game. Pies hit a single to right field that scored Leidy from second brining the Pioneers with two going into the top of the seventh.

The Pomeroys went on to score four more runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 9-3 which the Pioneers were never able to recover from.

Savannah Lee started in the circle for Point Park where she threw 4.0 innings giving up four runs, in which all were earned, on five hits to be tagged with the loss. Kristyna Mala came in and threw 2.0 innings of relief giving up five runs in which three were earned. Mala issued four walks in the effort. Game one pitcher Jaylyn Mullenax then entered to close out the game going 1.0 innings and giving up three hits.

Arndt led the Pioneer offense going 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Lee went 1 for 2 with two RBIs in the effort. 

Following the split, Point Park moved to 11-13 overall and 5-9 in conference play while the Pomeroy's moved to 17-11 overall and 10-4 in conference.

Point Park travels next to West Virginia on Tuesday to take on West Liberty University, who is a member of the Mountain East Conference, for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is schedule for 2:30 pm ET.
