Brescia (Ky.) takes two RSC games over Point Park, 1-0 and 4-3 in extra innings

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Point Park fell in two close games to Brescia University (Ky.) on Friday afternoon. In game one the Pioneers fell 1-0 to the Bearcats as the Point Park offense was only able to muster one hit. In game two, Point Park scored a run in the sixth and held Brescia scoreless in the sixth and the seventh to send the game to extras where the ultimately fell as Brescia's Courtney Peyton hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth. Peyton's home run made the final score 4-3 with Brescia securing the sweep.

 

Game 1:  

In game 1 the Pioneer offense struggled as they were only able to get one hit in the 1-0 loss. Brescia's lone run came in the first inning and from there no one else was able to score.

Point Park's Melanie Taylor started the game with a lead-off single to left field but Point Park went down in order from there.

Brescia's lone run came in the bottom of the first off a single up the middle by Kaylyn Sowders to score Berlyn Uken to give Brescia a 1-0 lead that stood the rest of the game.

Following the one run inning by Brescia, Point Park did not register another hit and Brescia only picked up two more hits.

Jaylyn Mullenax started in the circle for the Pioneers and pitched a complete game giving up only four hits and one earned run in the loss.

Melanie Taylor went 1 for 3 to lead the Point Park offense.

 

Game 2:

The Pioneer offense picked up in the second game but a timely walk-off home run by Brescia's Courtney Peyton in the bottom of the eighth earned Brescia the 4-3 extra innings win and a sweep of Point Park.

Brescia started the scoring in the bottom of the second as two back-to-back errors by the Pioneer offense allowed two Brescia runners to score with both being unearned. Brescia led Point Park 2-0 going into the top of the third.

Point Park broke through in the third inning for the first run of the day. Melanie Taylor led the inning off with a lead-off single to left field. Taylor then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mara Iagnemma coupled with smart baserunning.

Mia Arndt then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Taylor giving the Pioneers their first run of the day and cutting Brescia's lead down to one.

Brescia tacked on another run in the bottom of the third on another costly Pioneer error.

Lindsey Peyton started the inning off with a double to left center. Berlyn Uken then hit a groundball to shortstop that could not be fielded cleanly allowing Peyton to score from second extending the Bearcats lead to 3-1. 

The Pioneers scored again in the fifth inning as Taylor reached base again on a single up the middle. Iagnemma then was able to reach first on an error by the first basemen allowing Taylor to score making the score 3-2 still in favor of Brescia.

Point Park scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning. Raigan Chavez started the inning off by reaching first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Chavez then swiped second on a stolen base.

Hayley O'Neil then laid down a perfect bunt single to the pitcher to get an infield single and move Chavez over to third.

Two batters later Iagnemma singled to center field scoring Chavez, tying the game at 3-3.

No one scored in the seventh inning sending the game to extra innings.

The Pioneers were unable to score in the top of the eighth inning giving the Bearcats their chance to end the game.

In the bottom of the eighth senior Courtney Peyton led the inning off with a walk-off home run to left center giving the Bearcats a 4-3 win and earning the sweep of Point Park.

Savannah Lee started in the circle and pitched a complete game allowing six hits and four runs in which only one was earned. 

Melanie Taylor led the offense for the Pioneers going 3 for 4 while scoring two runs. Other Point Park players to get a hit in the game included Iagnemma, Arndt, Sydnie Reese, and O'Neil.

With the two losses Point Park falls to 11-14 overall and 5-11 in River States Conference play.

The Pioneers travel to Oakland City (Ind.) to take on the Mighty Oaks on Saturday in another River States Conference doubleheader with first pitch schedule for 2:00 pm ET.
