Box Score SOUTH CHARLESTON, Wv. – The #4 seed Point Park upset the #1 overall seed IU Southeast 4-2 in nine innings in the opening round of the River States Conference Softball Championship on Thursday. Point Park ignited for four runs over the last three innings to secure the upset victory.
The last time Point Park and IU Southeast met up at the RSC Softball Championship the Grenadiers walked away with a 1-0 victory to eliminate Point Park from the tournament last year, this time Point Park came out on top.
IU Southeast attacked first as the Grenadiers started the scoring in the bottom of the second as Erin Templeman started the inning off with a triple to center where she then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to give IU Southeast the 1-0 lead.
The Grenadiers added their final run of the opening round game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Macie Zink picked up her second RBI of the game on a single down the rf line to score Quinlynn Cunningham extending the lead to two.
Facing their last three outs, Point Park did not let that deter them as the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Savannah Lee started the inning off with a ground-rule double to center field to put a runner in scoring position for the Pioneers. At this point Raigan Chavez entered the game as a pinch runner for Lee.
Sydnie Reese followed up Lee with a hit of her own, a single to right field, to advance Chavez over to third. Point Park went to the bench again as Mackenzie Moore entered to run for Reese.
Moore then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for the junior first baseman Bella Magliocco.
Magliocco crushed a double over the head of the center field to score Chavez giving the Pioneers their first run of the game. Freshman Allyson Leidy came into the game to run for Magliocco.
With two outs Remi Koi hit a single in the infield to allow Leidy to score tying the game up at 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Point Park managed to shut down the Grenadier offense in order to send the game to extra innings.
Neither team was able to score in the eighth, but the Pioneers were able to come through in the bottom of the ninth.
Lee started the inning off by drawing a walk. Ava Hubble entered as the runner for Lee.
Reese then reached base on a bunt single to the catcher to put two runners on for Magliocco.
Magliocco then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners on to second and third.
With runners on second and third Hayley O'Neil hit into a fielder's choice but was able to reach base safely loading the bases for Koi.
Koi came through once again for the Point Park as she singled to left center allowing Hubble to score giving the Pioneers their first lead of the day.
Melanie Taylor followed suit with a single of her own to score Reese and extend the Pioneers lead to 4-2.
Point Park managed to get two fly outs and a ground out in the bottom of the ninth to escape with the huge upset victory over the IU Southeast Grenadiers.
Jaylyn Mullenax pitched a complete game throwing 156 pitches for the Pioneers in the phenomenal game for the sophomore. She allowed only two runs on eight hits to secure the win.
Remi Koi led the Point Park offense going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Sydnie Reese went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Melanie Taylor and Bella Magliocco with the other RBIs for Point Park.
With the win Point Park now moves on to the winner's bracket where they will face off with the #2 seed Rio Grande (Ohio) at 10:00 am ET at Little Creek Park. Point Park split the regular season series with Rio Grande, winning one at home and one one the road.
