Box Score 3 SOUTH CHARLESTON, Wv. -- Point Park played three games on Thursday where the Pioneer's ultimately fell in the semifinals of the River States Conference Softball Championship versus #2 Rio Grande (Ohio) to end their season. Point Park started the day out with a winner's bracket game versus Rio Grande where the Pioneers fell 3-1 to set up a rematch with #1 IU Southeast with the loser being elminated. Just as they did on Thursday, the Pioneers upset IU Southeast 4-2 to advance to the semifinals and set up a rematch with the Red Storm of Rio Grande while elminating the Grenadiers from the RSC Softball Championship. Point Park went on to fall against Rio Grande 3-1 in the semifinals to end the Pioneers season at 23-25 overall.
Game 1: Rio Grande 3 Point Park 1
With #4 Point Park's upset over #1 IU Southeast on Thursday, the Pioneers set up a matchup with #2 Rio Grande who had advanced to the winner's bracket with a win over #3 Oakland City on Thursday. Point Park was able to get a run on the board but Rio Grande fought back with two runs in the fourth to ultimately fend of the Pioneers.
The Red Storm started the scoring in the bottom of the third as Kayla Sedgwick hit a sacrafice fly to score Caitlyn Brisker.
Point Park got that run back in the top of the fourth as Sydnie Reese was able to connect on a pitch a single through the left side to score Mia Arndt who had reached on a single to centerfield.
Rio Grande was able to ultimately score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to give themselves the lead for good. A throwing error by the Pioneers allowed for Trinity Davis to score on a sacrafice bunt giving the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
Megan Bazler was then able to hit a sacrafice fly to right field to score Gabby Adams who had reached on a single. Rio Grande was able to shutout Point Park 3-1 to advance to the semifinals.
Savannah Lee went 6.0 innings giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Sydnie Reese led the Pioneer offense going 1 for 3 with an RBI. Melanie Taylor, Mia Arndt, and Savannah Lee each picked up a hit as well.
With the loss, the Pioneer's fell to the loser's bracket where they set up a rematch with #1 IU Southeast.
Game 2: Point Park 4 IU Southeast 3
In an elmination game Point Park was able to stun #1 IU Southeast again, Point Park scored three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to upset the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast's Autumn Oehlstrom gave the Grenadiers their first runs of the game as she belted a two run home run to centerfield to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Point Park got three runs back in the top of the fourth as Melanie Taylor led the inning off with a double down the left field line where she then advanced to third on an error by the left fielder.
Mara Iagnemma was then hit by a pitch and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Mia Arndt. Arndt delievered with a single to center field to score Taylor cutting IU Southeast's lead down to one. Arndt then stole second base putting another Point Park runner in scoring position, this time for Gianna Welsh.
Welsh was able to hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop that was unable to be handled allowing both Iagnemma and Arndt to score giving the Pioneers the 3-2 lead.
IU Southeast got a run back in the fourth to tie it as Cassi Roman doubled to left center to score Kendall Brown who had reached on a bunt single.
Melanie Taylor became the hero for the Pioneers in the top of the fifth. With one out, Taylor sent a shot over the left field fence to give Point Park the lead which would stand for the rest of the game. Taylor's home run gave the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.
Point Park was able to shutout IU Southeast the rest of the game earning the win while eliminating #1 IU Southeast.
Jaylyn Mullenax earned the win going all 7.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out five.
Melanie Taylor led the Pioneer offense going 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Mia Arndt went 1 for 3 with one run and one RBI.
With their win over IU Southeast the Pioneers set up a decisive semifinal rematch with Rio Grande.
Game 3: Rio Grande 3 Point Park 1
Point Park had more hits then Rio Grande but ultimately fell 3-1 in the semifinal game to end the Pioneers season.
Point Park started the scoring in the first inning as Mia Arndt doubled to left field to put a runner in scoring position for the Pioneers. Gianna Welsh followd Arndt up with a double of her own to give Point Park a 1-0 lead.
Rio Grande got that run back in the bottom of the first as Madison Ogden doubled to right field to score Caitlyn Brisker, tying the game up at 1-1.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Rio Grande scored two more runs. Madison Perry started the inning off with a solo home run to left center to give the Red Storm the lead. They were able to add another run as Peyton Young hit a sacrafice fly to center field to score Brisker, ultimately giving Rio Grande the 3-1 win and ending the season for Point Park.
Jaylyn Mullenax went 6.0 innings giving up three runs on six hits.
Gianna Welsh and Bella Magliocco each had two hits a piece for the Pioneers.
With the loss the Pioneer's season ends in the semifinals of the RSC Softball Championship leaving Point Park with a 23-25 overall record on the year.
