ELKINS, W.Va. – Point Park scored four goals in the first 20 minutes of play and then held off Davis & Elkins for its fifth win in six games on Wednesday evening in Mountain East Conference play in Elkins.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 5-2-1 overall and 4-1 in league play. Davis & Elkins falls to 0-5-3 overall and 0-4-2 in MEC play.
Chloe Hollott-Lo broke the scoreless deadlock in the 10
th minute on an unassisted goal, beating the goalkeeper low for the score.
In the 13
th minute on a corner kick,
Rebecca Pihlgren netted Point Park's second goal with an assist from
Sterre Kuijper. Pihlgren now has six goals on the year to lead Point Park and the Mountain East Conference.
Four minutes later,
Maria Fusillo beat the goalkeeper high on an unassisted goal to put the Pioneers out in front by a 3-0 advantage. In the 20
th minute,
Paula Sole got on the scoresheet, finding the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Late in the first half, Davis & Elkins got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by Rafaela Leao, making the halftime score 4-1 in favor of the Pioneers.
D&E made things interesting as the game reached the final 10 minutes, getting goals from Sophia Brown (80
th minute) and Hanna Tomas (82
nd minute) to make the score 4-3 in the closing minutes.
Statistically, Davis & Elkins held a 12-5 advantage in on-target shots, with Point Park goalkeeper
Frederieke Rijlaarsdam turning away nine saves. The Senators also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks as Point Park played back defensively with an early four-goal advantage.
Point Park will return home to host Glenville State on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
