Men Finish Runner-Up, Women Take 3rd at MEC Outdoor Championships

Sutherland wins 110m hurdles event and five school records fall on Tuesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Point Park men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Mountain East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday afternoon, with both teams finishing in the Top 3 of the team results.
 
The Point Park men finished runner-up with 126.5 points, behind the University of Charleston with 168 points. On the women's side, the Pioneers finish third (95 points) behind UC (205) and West Virginia Wesleyan (137).
 
Individually during the championship, Point Park turned in 18 all-conference performances, including four individual championships in the women's 10,000m (Cassondra O'Connor) and men's 110m hurdles (Kamar Sutherland), javelin (Nick Zaller) and long jump (Akeem Mustapha).
 
Sutherland was the fourth Pioneer to win an individual title at this year's championship, turning in a school-record time of 14.34 in the 110m hurdles final this afternoon to take first place. On Tuesday's evening, Sutherland was also named the MEC Freshman of the Year for men's outdoor track & field.
 
Mustapha also earned some hardware at this year's championship as the Most Outstanding Performer of the meet and the 2025 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Mustapha scored 26 points during the championship, finishing first in the long jump, second in the high jump, third in the triple jump and seventh in the 110m hurdles.
 
Three men's school records fell this afternoon, including Sutherland in the 110m hurdles to win the championship, Chevaughn Fletcher in the discus (42.78m), and Christian Reid in the 400m (48.94).
 
The Point Park women turned in two runner-up finishes on day three of the MEC Outdoor Championships, including Dunya Van den Tooren in the high jump (1.65m) and Cassondra O'Connor in the 5000m (18:03.79). Diamond Rush also finished third in the 400m with a school-record time of 55.97.
 
Additionally, the Point Park women's 4x400 relay team set a school record with a time of 3:59.57. The women's 4x400 team featured Paige Marnell, Lotte Zethof, Tanais Rojas and Diamond Rush.
