PITTSBURGH—The Point Park softball team is gearing up for their first ever Mountain East Conference Softball Championship in Salem, Virginia. The tournament features eight teams with four from each division competing in a double-elimination tournament from April 30 through May 3.
The Pioneers secured the #3 seed in the north with a split against Wheeling last weekend. Point Park will open the tournament up against the #2 seed in the south, Charleston, in a matchup scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the James I Moyer Sports Complex.
Point Park Softball Season Notebook
- In their first season in the Mountain East Conference the Pioneers finished the regular season off with a 10-18 league record. Point Park secured the #3 north seed with a big 11-3 win over Wheeling last Sunday.
- Going into the championship, Point Park is hitting .237 as a team which is 11th in the conference. Throughout their first 44 games the Pioneers have 272 hits including 51 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs, and 127 RBIs. Point Park has a slugging percentage of .320 and an on-base percentage of .300.
- The Pioneers have two players hitting over .300 going into the tournament. Mia Arndt continues to lead Point Park batting .397 with a team leading 50 hits including 12 doubles and five triples. The sophomore outfielder was most recently named the Mountain East Conference player of the year as Arndt hit for the cycle against Wheeling. Emma Henry is the Pioneers next best hitting as the sophomore transfer is hitting .313 with 36 hits and 15 RBIs.
- Despite untimely injuries, the Pioneers pitching staff continues to do well in the conference as Point Park is ranked 6th in the league. The staff has an ERA of 4.20 and they have thrown 27 complete games on the season. The Pioneers have 169 strikeouts on the season.
Last Matchup with Charleston
- The pair last met back on April 12 with the Golden Eagles getting a sweep of the Pioneers as Charleston took game one 8-2 then followed up with a 6-1 win.
- In game one the Pioneers scored two runs on five hits. Gianna Welsh went 1-for-3 with a solo home run while Remington Koi went 1-for-3 with an RBI double to lead the Pioneers. Three different Pioneers combined in the circle with Jaylyn Mullenax being tagged with the loss.
- Point Park fell in game two getting one run on six hits. Melanie Taylor had the games lone run for the Pioneers as the senior homered to left center in the top of the fifth to avoid the shutout. Taylor and Bella Magliocco each went 2-for-3 in the matchup. The Pioneers left seven runners on base. In the circle Savanna Lee and Alyssa Wahl split the time each going 3.0 innings. Lee started and was tagged with the loss giving up five runs on eight hits.
