WHEELING, W.Va. – After being held scoreless in their first two games of the 2025 season, the Pioneer men's soccer team scored two first-half goals and went on to defeat Wheeling University 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field.
With the win, Point Park improved to 1-2 on the year, including 1-1 in conference play. Wheeling falls to 0-3-1 and 0-2-1 in MEC play.
Fridolin Gefrorer broke the scoreless tie in the 28
th minute with an assist from
Finn Syson to make it 1-0. Six minutes later, Tom-lennard Donig made it 2-0 with an assist from
Lennard Schneider.
Point Park took a 2-0 lead into the locker room and held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the first half.
Ido Chalamish scored his first of two second-half goals in the 71
st minute, using an assist from
Giovanni Pezzi to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage.
Wheeling prevented the shutout in the 75
th minute on an unassisted goal by Elie Simon.
With under five minutes to play, Chalamish put an explanation point on the victory with his second goal of the game in the 86
th minute. The goal was assisted by Schneider for his second point of the afternoon.
For the game, Point Park held a 23-13 advantage in total shots, including a 14-8 mark in shots on goal. The Pioneers also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Gregorio Capponi (1-2) had a big afternoon in the Point Park goal, recording seven saves while allowing just one goal.
Point Park will now prepare for its home opener on Wednesday evening against West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
